@Puzzle Piece All restaurant prices are increasing. My husband and I were just discussing this at lunch. Steak dinners are expensive depending on the restaurant.

We recently took two friends to dinner and the bill for the four of us was enough to pay a house payment in the days of old. Love our friends.

Our favorite place for steak is Ruth Chris. The steak and sides are ala carte, however the sides are shareable sizes. When we go, it's close to $175-200. We might have one drink (not including tip). about once a year.

Sometimes I will pick up a cowboy ribeye at Lonestar, for take out, but we share it. About $32. Includes 2 sides and bread. Everything is so high everywhere.

We would like to share the steak and order sides, salads, appetizers,drinks.

Upscale restaurants charge an extra plate fee. So we might as well just take home the excess food.

We ate at a sports bar for $40 and that included the tip. 2 burgers, fries and a round of drinks.

We have a few (very few) "nice" restaurants in a college town. Most places are geared to students...tastes and budget.

When we do go to a fine restaurant, many times we order their steak burger (I ask them to eliminate the bun) since it comes with fries covered in shredded parm. OK, so I pick at them, but need to watch my carb choices.

Price? Crazy for the 2 steak burgers, share a huge salad and water...wine or drinks never ordered out. The last time with the tip was over $50!!!

My steak and lobster is now only for special ocassions. If I could lower the live suckers into the boiling water without crying, they'd be cooked at home.

I haven't been out to a steak dinner in years!!! We have a few restaurants we go to but really not very good and the prices are high as well--Sheesh---I ordered take- out for 5 people and it cost $123 recently!! They helped me move and was just teriyaki and was mediocre at best!! Sub sandwiches would have tasted better!!

The Wall Street Journal explained that steak is so high in grocery stores and restaurants due to the rapidly decreasing supply of cattle. there have been drought conditions, the pandemic and widespread cost increases gpthat have caused that have caused ranchers to sell off livestock. The number of cattle is the lowest it's been in five years.

From The Journal:

"The culprit is a rapidly shrinking supply of cattle. Years of drought conditions, which make cattle more expensive to raise, pandemic disruptions and widespread cost increases have prompted ranchers to sell off livestock. The number of cattle in the U.S. is at its lowest level in nearly a decade"

The USDA grade of beef greatly affects its price. Expect to pay way more for USDA Grade Prime (Most common in the higher end steak houses such as Ruth Chris. than for Choice and expect to pay way more for USDA Choice (most common in grocery stores and most restaurant menus, even ones that promote themselves as high end restaurants such as Brimstone and Shula's) than for USDA Select. Then there are ungraded streaks, often sold on QVC. The prices on these are set by the marketing of the items on the selling site and not by how high the quality of the steaks are.

Within grades there are level within grades. COSTCO used to sell a very high level of Choice steaks that were almost Prime when it comes to marbling. Their steaks were very close to Prime. I don't know what they are selling now.

I never order steak out. DH got a wood pellet grill, and he makes the best steak! I buy fillets on sale.
