Monetary gift for wedding

Our neice's son is getting married (out of town and who we never see). We are invitied to the wedding but unable to go because we will be traveling home from our summer vacation on the day. We will send a gift. The "new" registries ask for money for their "first home" (we paid for ours all on our own) or money for their honeymoon (we paid for that on our own as well). So if we send a check what is an acceptable amount? We are NOT close with him and will probably see them but once a year if at all. Is $200 enough?

$200 is a generous gift. If that's what you would like to give; do what your heart tells you and what your pocket allows.

No we most likely would not attend simply because it is out of town. Only 1 1/2 hours away but still...overnight a must. I really do like my neice and her mom so a nice gift is in order...we are close with them.

We went to A family wedding last November; they were in their 40s and had just bought their first home. They requested gift cards of your choice; since they have a Costco nearby, we bought them a $300 Costco off card ( and used most of last year's rewards points to pay for it). This was so easy that we'll buy Costco or Amazon gift cards from here on out!

@bargainsgirl - I think it's more than enough! We give $100 to relatives. And of course that's after the shower gifts.

This seems to be the way a lot of weddings are going. We've never been asked to help give the couple a house down payment, but we have bought lunch, dinner, and or a tour on the honeymoon.

DD always says you have to "pay for your plate." I always respond with "That's ridiculous!"

I kind of do my own thing. Most of the time we give money, but if the bride or groom are close to us I often give a gift I think would be perfect for them. I found a beautiful antique bowl In perfect condition with a wedding prayer printed in the inside bottom. It was over $100.00. Our one nephew and his wife have it in the middle of their dining room table.

In my family and my husband's, we only give money for weddings. I have never bought anyone a wedding gift in my entire life. When i got married, we sent out over 500 invites and we only received four wrapped gifts. Everyone else gave cash or check.

$200 is generous and I feel it is a perfect amount to give a family member you do not see often. I would not send more than that.

I understood if you aren't going, you aren't obligated to send a gift, plus you don't know them! So $200 is extremely generous, in my opinion!

That is way too generous since you're not attending the wedding. Many sites say to give what you can afford, nothing is right or wrong. It depends on your finances, how close you are to the family, are you attending, etc.?

As everyone else has stated, $200 is very generous and I'm sure will be much appreciated.

Like you, my husband and I paid for our honeymoon and our house ourselves. The money we received as gifts was greatly appreciated and went to necessities, but we didn't specify what we "needed" the money for.

I don't know why, but it really irks me when brides and grooms request money for their honeymoon or house fund. Just request money and leave it at that. Really grinds my gears. Hahahaha

$200 is very generous. It's what I would give if I knew this nephew and had real relationship with him. In your situation, where I don't have a relationship with him, I'd gift $100.
