I heard there's no tipping in California restaurants, is this true?

This is news to me. I haven't heard anything about it and the past few times I was out (within the last week), it was tipping as usual.

@Sunshine Kate Not only is there tipping still going on, it's everywhere, from the coffee shop to the fast food restaurant.

I wish it was like Europe, where the tip is already added to the price of the meal so you didn't have to think about it.

@CAcableGirl2 It's like that in the USofA too! Also, some even add "tip amount" suggestions at the bottom of the receipt.

Tipping is very much there. Didn't go away. Infact last time I went to a restaurant, the waiter stood next to our table all along when we paid our bill so that it gets awkward for us not to tip at all. I felt it was so much in the face.

I agree that it has gone too far. Tipping whom at a self checkout counter? Shows your price and % you want leave as a gratuity. For what?

Now I would say, in most restaurants, tipping is likely how most waiting on tables make 95% of their income. Been a long time since I did that kind of work, but I remember that my $.25 per hour, wasn't going to help my mother very much with paying bills.

Take $.25 times 8 hours it equals $2.00. On a weekend in tips making $10 per night was pretty normal, but most were closer to $15, on a good night. This was in the 1950's. I was making about $75-$80 a week.

Tipping a machine for dispensing your own drink? Nah! Somebody has to serve me and I will decide, if, and how much gratuity they deserve.

There is s still tipping in California. In fact in many restaurants if you have eight or more people in your party a tip is automatically added to your bill.

There is still tipping in Calif. I can't imagine how that rumor started. Frankly, that doesn't even make sense. Sometimes you have to just shake your head...

"Automatically added to my bill"? Is that a City/County or State Law? I don't eat out much, fact I can't remember the last time I did, but. Another 7 people wouldn't want me along, some here know the reason.

As I said in my other post, I decide my gratuity for service, not some other person or source. If it is mandatory in a location, any of the above Listed? I won't eat out. Gratuity and Mandatory, not even close definitions.

I am squeezing my fingers so I won't type, ah, anyways!

No, it’s not a law. Lol. Some restaurants have a policy of automatically adding gratuity for large groups. Usually 15% but it depends on the restaurant. It’s posted on the menu if they do.
