Ebay question

I ordered an item from Ebay, the sale seemed to go thru but the next morning, I got a message that the order was cancelled and that it was ME that cancelled, I did not cancel.

I contacted the seller, and I never got a clear answer, just, item was cancelled, and I did contact her several times.

Yesterday, Ebay asked for reviews and I did not give her a good review, this morning, the seller contacted me, said she did not have the item to send and therefore she cancelled the item. Now she wants me to adjust my review in her favor.

Is there a reason I should change my review..I was honest in my comments.

as a seller, eBay doesn't like it when an order is canceled for any reason. and you get dinged.

actually it's better for you, the order was cancelled right away

and feedback extortion is also a no no,

just block her

you could report her but there's no reason

It was obvious from that first email that just didn't have the item. Then you harassed with emails for an item she didn't have, then you got mad and tried to ruin her business with a bad review. I would change the review but I would not have written in the first place.

I am not an Ebay buyer, I've not bought anything from that site for years. BUT, it I were buying an item and had the buyer cancel the item with no explanation I would have done the exact same thing. It would have taken her a few minutes to reply that the item was no longer available, had she answered your first email as she just did this morning that would be different but as it is she said YOU cancelled the order, that isn't a great review of you as a customer. I would not change my review.

@chrystaltree I think the OP was owed an explanation as to why the order was canceled. According to her the cancelation notice said that she canceled it, which she did not. A good seller would have explained why in the first cancelation notice.

@Mom2Dogs Being a customer as both a buyer and a seller, on Ebay, here is my opinion.

I have had a handful of items cancelled by the seller due to unavailability. Some sellers offer the same item at a higher BIN price and then offers the same item as an auction. Occasionally the item will still be open in the auction but somebody purchased the BIN at the higher price. I have no idea why a person buys at this much higher price but they do. There's a few other reasons for the item not available, but it's kind of irrelevant in this case.

When this happens, the items become unavailable. Usually a seller will just say "Item Cannot Be Found/Lost" or "Item is Unavailable". You then get a refund, no further explanation. The seller should have been upfront and told you SHE cancelled.

Regardless, I don't feel your feedback was uncalled for. If a seller cancels my order, and I always pay immediately, I would leave a Neutral feedback just stating I did not receive my item due to seller cancelling. Now, if the seller lied to me, I would leave a negative review basically stating the same thing.

Reviews are to review the transaction. If you are honest with the review, there is no reason to retract it. Other buyers need to know if a seller is known to cancel orders, whether the item can't be found, sold elsewhere, or just lack of organization by a seller.

When you sell on Ebay, does a review make a difference to you? I understand no one wants a negative review but what if I just don't reveiw at all, even tho EBAY encourages me to review?

First email said that I CANCELLED, I did not.

that is the fishy part, a seller can't cancel, only a buyer can

I know b/c I just went thru it with something I ordered.

NO, don't change your review. the vendor should have let you know that she cancelled for a reason. not getting back to you was 100% wrong. it's not fair to the sellers that are very good at communication, that's how ebay works. good seller, good review. (no, I don't sell on ebay, but I buy on ebay, and i look at the ratings before making my decision.)

@Mom2Dogs If I am not happy with my purchase, which is super rare, I usually leave a Neutral. Most all the sellers I deal with try to make things right by offering a discount on your next order or a $10 credit or something similar. I've had wrong items shipped to me and sellers are very helpful. They haven't once asked me to return the item. They say keep it and will ship the correct item, which usually isn't available, or give me some kind of credit. These sellers I normally leave a Positive review with a brief explanation that item was not available but seller made it right.

And yes, negative reviews can be detrimental to a seller. Like I said, I try to avoid them unless a seller is blatantly lying or scamming the buyers.

I've been a member for 20 years and 99% of the time I have a good experience. However, with that said, I tend to buy from the same sellers I trust and offer items I can use and want.

I've ordered from Ebay and had a couple problems with sellers. I don't leave a review with them and just don't buy from them anymore..less stress that way. I would leave your review since she never told you SHE had canceled the item.

I haven't dealt with eBay for quite a while, but I used to buy a lot through them. I had mostly good experiences. I'm not sure I ever left a negative review; maybe once, when a seller was really bad. (Sent absolutely defective jewelry - missing stones, broken prongs - and basically said "tough"; refused to do anything about it. I ate the cost, but left a negative review to warn others. I realize now I should've reported her to eBay.)

I had another who was selling some earrings I wanted for a special occasion. I emailed to make sure they would be sent in plenty of time (yes, absolutely!) and then used the BIN option. Well, the earrings arrived way too late for the event and, when I contacted the seller, she simply said "Oh, I only ship on (blah, blah, blah) dates" and "I do the best I can". And lie to your customers? Would never deal with her again, if she lies just to make a sale. I left a neutral review - earrings okay, seller not so much and why.

@Mom2Dogs - No, I would not retract your review. From what you've told us, the seller had plenty of opportunity to explain the situation to you and make things right.

Yes, exactly. I agree with the OP. She didn't harass the seller, she simply wanted an explanation. I wouldn't change the negative review. Next time that seller will be more proactive.

Yes, the seller can cancel a transaction. I've had it happen as well.

I don't give negative reviews. I will write item was canceled. Too many times vendors and customers are under pressure and become flustered, especially if a customer is contacting them too many times with the same questions. We're all human and often times don't respond in a way a customer or vendor would like.
I believe too many times a bad review is revenge.

Most ebay vendors are small businesses and a bad review does hurt their business.
