NICKNAMES IN REAL LIFE?

Shanus...short and sweet to me, but in the last several years, I've noticed some friends and family have shortened my name to "Shane". The GDs even refer to me as Mom Mom Shane, now. DH has caught the bug, too.

It reminds me of the "Court" syndrome, etc. here. Anyone have nicknames or shortened names? Like them or find them annoying and/or not necesary?

Pet peeve. Introduce myself as "Susan" and almost immediately my name becomes "Sue". Because of this I'm very much in tune when a person introduces themself that I continue to call them their introductory name unless asked to call another.

I do have a nickname that is the popular nickname for my real name. Without saying what it is, but an example would be like Debbie for Debra or Kathy for Kathleen. I do like it and it comes in handy when someone calls me on the phone, for instance. If they don't call me by my nickname I know they either are a salesman or someone that really doesn't know me.

My name can be shortened and for most of my life people have and I dont mind. Never really had a nickname. But I have been called a lot of names in my life time.

I tried for years to get people to call me by name, but it was hopeless. People will call you what they like and it is pointless to make an issue of it. JMO

I'm that way with Mrs. I know if you start by calling me Ms. or Mrs. your trying to sell me something or I don't know you. I have never used either title ever. I go by my first and last name.

Growing up, and all during adulthood, I was always rescuing, bringing home critters & I mean all kinds of them. Became a licensed wildlife rehabber. My family handed me the nic of Ellie May and it stuck. My real name is nowhere near Ellie, but my husband called me that with endearment. During his last days in hospice, he would call for Ellie. They thought he was delusional, but I knew, ---- . Its just a part of who I am.

Well this is something I do all the time so I hope most people don't mind it (yikes)......I have nic names for all of my friends, even my kids. ie, my daughter is Angela and I call her Ang. Just mean it in a loving way, my nic name in high school was Sally (short version of my maiden name). It's all good

@Lucky Charm I got called "Babe" by the guy I dated beore DH. I felt it was demaning for some reason. He didn't last long because although I objected, he still called me that.

My given name is Jennifer but it isn't who I am. My oldest sister, by 15 years, told me as soon as I could string together a sentence I would tell people "I am Jenny". I detest being called Jen almost as much I being called Jennifer.

I feel exactly the same. I use different iterations of my name for different people in different circumstances. I don't like it when they take it upon themselves to call me a diminutive of my name if they're merely acquaintances. (Close friends and family are a different story.)

So, like you, I'm very aware of how I'm introduced to someone and will call them what they tell me their name is. I assume that's what they prefer.

@Shanus I have thankfully never been called babe. It reminds me of 90 Day fiance and those romance reality shows. I always think the guy calls the woman "babe" because he either can't pronounce her name or forgot it.

All my life people have tried to rob me of the name my parents gave me and all my life I have politely corrected to those people. And if they persist, I remind yhem...them again but not so politely. What is wrong with people who let something like this go on but meekly say nothing?

I see nothing wrong with Tutu--it has a meaning.

I wouldn't mind being called Babe and have been.

Don't see anything demeaning about it. I've called my husband Babe before, rarely, but still....

I have a nick that only my family or people really close to me call me. My real name is the shortened form of a more formal name (like Jenny used for Jennifer). I have considered changing my legal name to my nick.

My husband is the only one that can call me babe without sounding skeezy.

I don't care for nicknames . If you do any genealogy research such as I , it can be a nightmare in tracing relatives to complete branches of ones genealogy tree.

I looked for yrs to find /locate a Grt Grt Uncle who my Mother only knew his nickname .

I had an old pic of him from the 1930's .

Finally , after yrs . I found his Granddaughter who was also conducting genealogy research . She had him listed in her tree by his proper birth name. I asked her if he had a nickname of the person I was looking for .

When I was very young(12) and working as a carhop, my nickname was "Roundy". It was in reference to my body size. I was young, and several of them were from the Air Force Base, just outside our town. Grew up very quick around guys in the military, if you know what I mean.

In my early 20's a group of my car club friends decided to give me another nic. We were looking through an old garage owned by 1 of their grandpa's. I inadvertently stepped on a nail sticking up out of a board. It went up into the bottom of my foot.

Went to doctor and got, I think were probably antibiotics, and got crutches. Somehow 1 of my genius 5 friends, thought up a nic for me, that seem to stick. I was referred to this for a long time around all the car club guys. The number in the nic depended on how many I was with at any time.

"JC and the Nail Driving 5"! The JC is a religious reference, as is the number which followed it.

Now it it more "old man", not a reference to my marital status.
