Do You Ever Worry About A Poster? I'm Worried About Apple Head.

In early January, Apple Head posted that after finding a job, she was having a hard time catching on and feared she might lose it. Being single and over 50, she had very little to fall back on. The last comment she left on these boards implied she was planning to harm herself. I do wish we would hear from her and have an opportunity to offer her support.

I remember that thread. It's hard to say if she hasn't posted because of her situation or because of some responses to her thread. Yes, I hope she's doing well.

I have wondered about Apple Head as well, AuntG. I remember her thread about her misgivings in her new job but didn't know that it was her last post. Perhaps she will post here and let us know that she is okay. As I recall, some tried to help Apple Head but she took it as criticism.

@If Apple Head reads this, perhaps she will check in. I have no doubt that many would be glad to hear from her and know how she is doing (even if they then offered her advice she wasn't too keen on). I tried to alert her by typing @Apple Head, but it didn't automatically complete like it usually does, so maybe she deleted her profile.

She the one who complained that at her new job, lunches were 30 minutes, instead of a full hour, and that she still hadn't received her badge, two days into the job, and that she had to get up at like 3 o'clock in the morning?

Then when she wasn't getting the sympathy, she said, something like, "maybe I should just slit my wrists and get it done and over with!"

Is that her?

Yup, that's the one.

A bit melodramatic, when people weren't giving her tea and sympathy, and instead were giving her a reality check.

I don't like it when someone threatens to do that, just because they weren't getting the responses that they wanted.

People have lost loved ones to suicide.

Some have even been the ones to find the body.

So what she said, was totally uncalled for, because it was absolutly disrespectful of those who have lost loved ones to suicide.

No, I'm not worried about the drama queen, and her flair for the melodramatics.

Do I ever worry about a poster? Yes, I have on rare occasions, especially if they have *physical* ills.

But do I worry about every poster who mentions having problems, possibly harming themselves, goodbye cruel world, etc. - no, although feel sorry for, yes, sometimes.

I am never impressed or affected by written comments/"threats" in forums, as these are 99% for dramatic effect. As for the 1%, even IF someone wanted to make others feel responsible, IMO they are not. I cannot and do not feel personally responsible for the mental health of others - especially those I do not have a face-to-face relationship with. I just don't feel personally responsible for the world, or feel the need to personally surround everyone in warm fuzziness.

I have no reason to tear people down OR build them up.

I too have been concerned about @Applehead .

None of us can know why she said what she said, and I hope she is alright.

Regarding some remarks made about her post -

Many people HAVE lost loved ones to suicide, the experience is not unique to any one person. It frequently heightens empathy and understanding in the survivors. If it leaves anger in it's wake, there is an issue there to be dealt with.

I can't see it as disrespectful, or uncalled for that she said such a thing but rather a call for help. Making harsh, judgemental comments about someone whose circumstances and needs are uniquely their own is just that - harsh and judgemental.

I think how we reply to others can make quite an impact. Some people are sensitive. Or, they may be in a terrible place, emotionally. They may be depressed, or a number of other situations.

I think that is the salient point, doing so seems to make some feel 'better' in some way. I always enjoy your posts, may not always agree, but see your reasoning.

But on a public forum, I see no need to walk on eggshells with every poster. While I have no need or desire to tear someone down just because I can, I also do not feel constrained from responding honestly when someone posts. There are those who, in real life as well as on the internet, perceive any comments that are not hugs and strokes as bitter attacks. This is not realistic or valid, and the rest of the world should not be held accountable, by anyone, for the delicate flowers of the internet.

@AuntG, I hesitated to post, and I'm sort of "walking on eggshells" here with my comment, but since you and others are worried about this particular person... I think she might be posting under a different nickname but I could be wrong. I only mention the possibility because I know some posters are genuinely worried about her well-being (I have been), and that's heartwarming and kind and I'm hoping to help. If I'm mistaken about another nickname, my sincere apologies. It won't be the first time I'm wrong, and won't be the last. In general, if you do wonder about a poster it helps to try and use the "@ plus nickname" notification.

So, in this case, this links to her account:

@Plaid Pants2, I know far more than any person should ever have to know about suicide... and others here do, too, so I understand your comments. I hope everyone will be thoughtful and careful before they post such things. Even so, that doesn't keep me from worrying about those who post threats.

So nice of you to start this thread @AuntG. I hope we hear from her too. I’ve been praying since her last post that she’ll learn the job with ease and that things will become easier for her. I took the comments about hurting herself as a figure of speech similar to, “just shoot me now”. No one really means that. It’s something said in frustration. At least that’s how I hope she meant it. I hope and pray she’s doing well.
