My friend says she has to bring her three year old Honda Accord into the dealership for an update on the car's computer. She received an email from Honda telling her what to do. I don't have a new car. I had no clue that this was even a thing with newer cars. I don't like updating my devices. I can't believe new cars need updates too. Sometimes I wish we could go backwards in time.

I had to take my 2017 Subaru Forester in a couple of months ago to get the Starlink Security/Safety System stuff upgraded because it used 3G wireless network to work, which was being retired by the provider. They had the car all day to do the upgrade to the system.

This is from the Subaru website:

STARLINK Safety and Security connected services rely on a wireless connection, and in some older model year Subaru vehicles, these services use a 3G network. In February 2022, the current wireless provider has elected to retire this 3G network, which will affect services such as Automatic Collision Notification, SOS Emergency Assistance, and remote vehicle features in those affected vehicles.

Subaru retailers are offering a complimentary update for affected vehicles that have an active STARLINK Safety and Security subscription. This update will allow continued access to these important STARLINK Safety and Security services. If an affected vehicle is not updated before the 3G network retirement date, the subscription will be canceled.

I drive a 2017 Kia Soul, I received a safety recall notice in the mail on Friday, this one for airbags not deploying in an accident. It'll either be another software update or the airbags will have to be replaced, I was told they won't know until they have the car & are checking out the issue. I was told I'd have to leave the car for several hours while the necessary work was being done.

My car needed another software update a few months ago. At the same time, the car was checked out & I was given a list of maintenance items totaling $800 that they "strongly suggested" I should have done. I declined to have work done, instead taking the car to my usual mechanic, who told me that my car was thousands of miles away from needing any of the work the dealership said the car needed.

I think in terms of nmber of repairs and maintenance it really depends on the year of the car and also the individual car itself. My mother had a honda accord that ran well over 100,000 miles without any major problems.I've had Subarus and Hyundais that had problems and many recalls.

And just like many auto mechanics, there are some dealerships who are trustworthy and others who are not.

It is really a wonderful thing to find a mechanic whether dealer or not in your own neighborhood that you trust.

Just like finding a doctor and everything else.

I think too that we don't need so many computerized things that tend to need replacement or repair-from washers and dryers, to cars and everything under the sun!

I have a 3 year old Honda CRV and I don't have to keep taking it for updates. I don't even know if my computer system has been updated. I take it in for oil changes and inspections so they might have updated it during one of those visits.

But, if it's based on mileage I only have 15,000 miles. I don't drive long distances.

I drive a 2020 Toyota Camry. A few weeks ago, my gas gage stopped working. I filled the tank but it still showed that I needed gas. I took it to the dealership and was informed it needed a software upgrade. It works fine now. Never would I have thought the gas gage would be impacted by software.

My car was not having any issues, but 15 years ago my CRV had a scheduled maintenance every 5,000 miles. Some were simple; others more expensive. It was tiresome taking the car in for service so often. I never had problems with the car, but the expense of the scheduled maintenance added up over time.

@On It wrote:

@Mindy D I agree. Personally I do not believe these cars need all of the computer technology being used in them. I did hear that some of the manufacturers are going to simplify the number of diffferent kinds of chips they are using in future cars.

As for Honda, they require a lot of maintenance, service appointments. It seemed like my CRV needed a required service way too often. That was about 15 years ago. As I recall, 30,000 miles was one of the big scheduled service milestones. I guess now there is a computer involved as well. Funny how the sales people forget to mention the frequent maintenance and the costs for those.

NOT my experience at all. I've had Hondas for more than thirty years. Never take it to Honda dealer for maintenance, but instead a local mechanic who only services Hondas. Routine oil changes and first big service at about 60 thousand which is standard in the industry. My Hondas run forever with very little out of pocket expenses. That's why I buy them. Right now, I have a 2015 CRV with 140 thousand miles and I've only had one minor problem that was fixed easily. I will say that dealers will get you on everything if they can. That's why I refuse to let them service my cars. As far as recalls, I had one on this car.

I ignore the Honda updates for the navigation system. It's just a way to get you into the dealership. I've never updated my navigation system. Not sure about the other updates they send out. I would research first to see if the update is necessary as a safety issue. If not, ignore it.
