Slipped on icy front steps on Tuesday Morning........ took a bad fall...

I was headed to the mailbox to put mail out... was not thinking about icy steps as we have not had really cold weather yet.... oh my Gosh did I take a fall. feet went up and down I fell to the bottom step of 6 steps. My back landed straight down on the edge of the last step,,, right across the middle of my back. I knew I was injured... got up.... and walked to the mail box anyway.... came inside... did not want to sit down as I was afraid I would not get back up... I changed out of PJs into regular clothes so I would be ready to go to emergency if needed...... got the dog dinner ready for later incase I was not around.... and just paced the house... for about an hour to see how I felt.... I did put an ice pack on my back. I also took arnica every hour for about ten hours orally throughout that first day. I have been doing ice and heat today intermittently off and on too.

Now it is two days since... I am in pain... understandably.... thankfully have really good pain pills leftover from my joint surgeries from years ago that I kept. ( Never throw out pain pills!😄 )They are helping me. I did take Tylenol and Asprin first....but that did not cut it. I will see how I do by Monday and decide if I need to have a doctor look at the injury site. So far, I think it is just an impact injury that will take time to heal. I am sure I have no fracture as the pain is not constant... only when I bend down and get up from laying down.

Such a stupid thing to do! Just not being careful. I have slipped and fallen on ice several times before too.... dumb dumb dumb.

Please do not tell me to go to the doctor....I will go if it does not get better or show signs of improvement by Monday.

So just want to say...be extra careful out there with winter ice and slippery conditions!❤️❤️❤️

Great timing too....my DH's back s bothering him right now.....we are quite a pair🤕🤕🤕

sorry to hear that SeaMaiden.It will take time to heal , but I am sure you will be ok .It is my fear so I have ordered the boot grips from QVC that stop slips , but they are slow shipping and we have low temps here .I found x1 in our house from yrs ago , but need a pr maybe I will wear 1 if it gets that bad !!!!

I also have salt [safe for dogs] which I have put on my steps .

Winter is such a risk my husband fell in the drive on ice a yr ago and hurt his shoulder , it took 2 months to get better , Dr said it was not broken ,

My fear is a hair line fracture or a mild concussion. Please take care.

Taking old pain pills can interfere with the doctor's treatment if you do go (in which case take the old pills so they can see in case of a medicine interaction).

@SeaMaiden Don't take aspirin and Tylenol together; double dose of NSAIDs is hard on kidneys, especially with your old pain pills. I hurt just thinking about your fall. It may take awhile to get over this

I am glad to hear you say the pain is better and is not nonstop....please know that you could have suffered a fracture even though you are able to move around....and the pain pills could mask an injury, so please keep your promise that you will see a dr if you are not much better very quickly. Take care and be careful out there!

I actually remember you falling before,don't you just hate that,falling that is ,this worries me about falling ,as we age ,it can be very serious,but you know that ,take care ,i hope you get better,i won't tell you what you don't want us to say

I'm so sorry and I bet that does hurt!

You are doing everything right and I hope it gets better every day.

Everytime something like that happens, I think we always blame ourselves and wish we could do it over!

It sure makes us appreciate the times we are ok!

Be gentle with yourself and I hpe your husband feels better too!

Sounds like a nasty fall, even moreso when on an uneven surface with edges, like steps. I have several permanent reminders of falling on the ice, and NO, not while ice skating, those are too numerous to count.

Fell on the pointed edge of our 2 steps outside our patio room. Managed to break some of the fall with my forearm to keep my head from hitting the handrail.

Just the jolt on some falls are enough to cause some serious pain, without breaking any bones or tearing any connective tissue. Sounds like you have this under control and will follow up with whatever you feel is necessary to take care of your body.

One thing I will say about falling while ice skating? The ice surface is flat with no corner peaks to add more pain to the fall.

I wish I could say I hope this is very short lived, but! While most of the serious pain subsides, the body can take a long time to heal.

Yikes. It is that time of year but falls can and do happen any time of the year. I think sometimes we just get distracted. I had a bad fall in September and it was bizarre. I have spinal stenosis and sometimes I need a cane because I get a little wobbly. I always use my cane when I park in the parking lot of the grocery store because it's not well paved. But for some crazy reason, when I got out of the car, I did not take my cane. My mind thought it was 7 years ago. I jumped out of the car and started walking like I had no issues at all, I was fast walking and I fell flat on my face ! I could feel myself going down and I didn't want to damage the knee that was replaced or my face! I put my hand over my face and flung myself forward so I wouldn't land on my knees. And then I couldn't stand up! Two nice guys hoisted me up on my feet and a lady who is an RN ran other to help me. She walked me to a bench in the store and checked me for cuts, scrapes but I was fine. Embarrassed but fine. I did my shopping. I pushed the cart to my car and went home. I was fine for 2 days. On the third day, my abdomen and my hip bones were killing me! I couldn't bend. Sitting down was painful but I couldn't get out of a chair without assistance. I took extra strength Tylenol along with motrin which helped. Black and blue marks came later. I knew it was just bruising and I just needed to take something for the pain and let the healing begin. It took about 3 weeks. I felt so stupid, I down played the whole thing to everyone, even hubby.

Sorry this happened to you, hope you feel better soon. You CAN indeed take aspirin with Tylenol. Motrin too. They work on pain differently and you get more relief when taken together. Just follow the instructions and don't over dose.
