I'm a little confused on how to apply for social security.i am 65 and live in ill.where do I begin?I plan on going to the local ss office.what do I need to bring for id?ID? Do I bring my ss card with?I hope they will help me,because I do not have a computer at home,just the library where I work.not to mention,not sure if I will understand setting it up.will they tell me how much Ican get and if I can continue to work.also,can I draw off of my ex s ss?I'm just so over welmed.i appreciate all responds qvc friends

@Luvsmyfam - call your local SS office, make an appointment, ask them what you need to bring with you and go from there. They should be able to answer all of your questions when you meet with them.

@Luvsmyfam It's actually quite easy. A lot of SS offices are still closed to the public due to Covid. Call the 800 number.It's 800-772-1213. They will make a telephone appointment for you for a convenient day & time. Someone will call you at that time.They are very helpful & will answer all your questions. Just have your SS number handy.

Both DH & I signed up this way .It was very easy!! No need to stress.

I'm in the process of applying for ss. I would call your local office to set up an appt. I called and my local office is doing phone interviews only. They will tell you what you need as far as ss card,etc. I live in Tx so it could be different where you live.I hope this helps.

As Frosty Babe said: make an appointment with the social security office. When you do, they will tell you what you need to bring--birth certificate, social security card, etc. They will tell you how much you are entitled to and answer all your other questions. Don't worry!

I really have no idea about that.

It's unfortunate that you're not able to apply on-line. My older sister just applied that way and she said it only took 20 minutes.

@Luvsmyfam They are very efficient and organized. I did the whole thing over the phone. Never went to an office. Have you signed up for Medicare? That's the hard, confusing part.

You can call the SS office in your area and they will tell you what you need to bring in for your appointment. It's a fairly easy process in my opinion. The only thing is to make sure you get there early so you don't have to sit all day. There was a room full of people waiting when I signed up and that was in 2016. I can imagine it's a longer wait now and hopefully they have the staff needed. You might be able to sign up online in this day and age. Good luck and congratulations !

SS will call you back if all of the reps are tied up. They have always called me back when they said they would.

no,im not signed up for medicare.because I'm still taking a breast cancer pill,and on medicade program thru breast and cervical program.i hope everything goes smooth with this.i am taking off work this coming Friday to get all of this started

@Luvsmyfam It was so easy for us to sign up over the phone. The person who called was the same person you would speak to if the office was open. My DH & I had separate appointments over a year apart. We both had pleasant experiences. It went really easy!! We were impressed with how smoothly it went.

I just went online last month and entered the info requested. Real easy. In fact, they sent me an email today to call them just to verify some information. Yes it was legit because they did not ask for personal info and the address was from the ssa. They just want to inform me of when to expect my first check and the amount. I see no reason to go down and talk to anyone when I can do it myself.
