just found out a close co workers got his 3rd dui over memorial weekend.he has been told,if he goes to rehab,which he plans to do he might get a lighter sentence.even tho he is a 40 yr old man,and should know better,I still feel so sorry for him.he has actually shed tears when telling me this.he has a longtime girlfriend and a 14yr old son.he is buying his home,and just bought a different vehicle.i can only listen to him and certainly not judge.im sorry, maybe this subject has no place for discussion in here

Alcoholism is a disease. Hopefully, treatment will help him get control of his situation. You are kind to offer support to him. You can only provide support and hope he gets the help he needs to stop making bad choices.

lolakimono,I certainly hope this is his rock bottom.but I also hope he can see light at the end of the tunnel.going through a divorce,put me in a very dark place.that was10 yrs ago.somehow,I pulled myself through all of it.i know,everyone has had darkness in their life at 1 point

His third DUI??

Once is a mistake, after that it's a habit, IMO.

If you ever lost loved ones due to a drunk driver, maybe you wouldn't have so much sympathy for the drunk driver.

It's really hard to lose loved ones to someone who was just selfish and uncaring and CHOSE to drive drunk.

Of course, your co-worker hasn't killed or seriously injured anyone.....yet.

And of course, they always agree to go to 'rehab' for a lighter sentence.

No sympathy from me, he's lucky he didn't kill or harm an innocent person...he deserves the harshest sentence & largest fine possible.

Three is way past a mistake. The way to help is get him in a program and make sure he takes it seriously. I would think the courts would not be so lenient as this is his third. I'm assuming his license was or will be suspended.

It would be hard for me to shed any tears for someone who drives while impaired.

Our youngest was struck by a drunk driver when he was 19. He will always have the facial scars and the mental scars that go with them. The drunk went to jail only because he killed someone in his car. I wanted to pretend he went to jail because of what he did to our son and his friend who was driving at the time.

His wife, when 7 months pregnant, was struck head on by a drunk driver who went to jail because it was a 3rd offense.

Thankfully our daughter in law and our grandchild were okay.

If only drunk drivers hit/killed other drunk drivers.....

@Luvsmyfam You are a great co-worker for listening without verbal judgement. Nothing you could have said in judgement would make him feel any worse than he is feeling right now. And turning your back on him won't help him, actually he will remember who the people were that didn't vocally judge him, and it will help him to know that not all people are so "perfect" that they can't accept anything less. Too many people are so judgemental, until they themselves do something that deserves kindness. They will sadly find the people they turned their backs on have left them, and they might find themselves alone. All told, there are degrees of alcohol impairment, and just maybe he was slightly over, in the law, but not impaired in his ability to drive. You are a kind and gracious person.

Too bad he's not going to rehab for a more noble reason than getting a lighter jail sentence, like permanently curbing his addiction. Sounds like he's not sincere about making a lasting change. Next time he'll probably get a prison sentence, which will ruin his life.

3rd dui? NO sympathy from many of us. He's lucky he didn't kill someone. Once is a mistake. After that it's intentional. I can judge someone with 3 dui's.

My first husband and father-in-law died due to drunk driving.

Driving drunk is a choice that puts innocent people in harms way.

I have zero sympathy for crying drunk drivers.

If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. Throw the book at him!

I have a soft spot in heart.i truly understand what all of you are saying.and I agree.im just sad of everything he could and probably will loose

I can't believe the don't judge replies about a third time DUI so let me share just 1 victims story...she's driving home on the freeway & has be cut out of her car, air lifted to a trauma center where all 4 limbs have to be removed & the burns on her torso treated. I met this women in the hospital rehab center, she'd been in the hospital for months. One day when she was working to strengthen her core her daughter came running into the center, her little shoes made a clicking noise on the wood floor as she ran arms wide open to hug her mom, her mom bent over so greet her because she had no arms to embrace her daughter....sweet, heartbreaking, it's something I'll never forget. The drunk that changed her life forever walked away from the accident...who cares if he's sorry, what he did can't be changed.
