July Birds Nest 2021

Welcome old friends and new to the Birds Nest for July. We've hit the mid-year mark and I'm feeling like I suffered missing time (X-Files reference).

Since it's been so hot and humid in my part of Michigan I thought that I would feature birds taking a bath this month.

If ever there was a wild bird in my backyard that enjoys a bath it has to be the robin. I mean they just throw themselves into it.

Sparrows like a bath too. Unlike the robin, they leave some water behind for the other backyard birds

Cardinals are so romantic. They travel together, eat together and bathe together.

Among the trees is a bird's nest,

and in the nest her three eggs rest,

and in each egg, Hush, you'll be heard!

There lies asleep A tiny bird.

not much today,

sun is out but obscured by clouds, that milky color sky, storms just west of us, should be in area give or take 1-2pm today.

did do chores,

did get walk in

not much else did hang out a small load of clothes,hope they dry.

@Bird mama Yesterday, had the sprinkler on until dusk, and the chickadees were flying through it, resting on trees, then flying back through it, also used the small bird bath, delightful to see. This time of evening is when I like to be out puttering as no sun, but it is feeding time, so I hear the flutter of Mourning Doves leaving the bird bath, again this morning, which upsets me as I don't want to interfere with their dining. Also, bunnies rush through the shrubs when they hear me.

Hi Birding Friends, My granddaughter and her family including one of their dogs are here visiting and we've been keeping so busy. National Museum of Transportation to see the steam engines on Monday, St. Louis Zoo yesterday. I've been trying to keep up with the great grandsons, but am lagging way behind. My back and hips just don't cooperate with my mind and intentions. Did get some more 'trash' out of the house and up to the road thanks to my brother and his wife.

I hope to get back to being able to post sometime next week when Jillian and family head back to OK.

We've been drenched by rains, with some places in mid Missouri getting over 11 inches of rain in the past few days. Both the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers are now in flood stage. Here, I got over 5 inches of rain. Lots of yard work to catch up on after it drys out a bit.

Have a wonderful celebration of our country's birthday and a safe, happy weekend.

I have a shot I took a few years ago of a robin taking a bath in one of the water bowls I have out back for the birdies, where I feed them. I thought this one was pretty cute!

@chickenbutt It is! Years ago, I had a huge cement dog bowl that the Robins would literally line up to use, and while in line, squabbles occurred, may have been the youngsters, lol, so funny and fun to see. Later while pruning, I found many Robin nests.

hello all

not much here

had some heavy duty weather roll thru yesterday later afternoon, funnel clouds set down in delaware and new jersey did some damages in both states.

today it is warmish,coolish,no air movement to cool to run the air cond/to warmish to open up. no air movement outside, no wind to speak of,just heavy warm damp air.

not much else. did chores,did walk.have clothes to fold.later

I have some shots of the little bitty birdies all crowded into the smaller water bowl. Sometimes there will be 5 or 6 of them crammed in there and, often, a little brawl will break out between a couple of them.

So cute! I love watching birdies bathe. They get that spikey hair and it's just adorable. I've probably taken thousands of birdie pics over the last 10 years or so. Most of my shots, like the one I posted here, were actually taken from my kitchen, through the kitchen window. I could watch them all day!

So I see that some of us have slightly different nicknames. The Q decided to split bird from mama and I can't put it back because they consider it taken already. Always something going on at this website.

I have a new patient at my house - a pigeon named Alex. Long story short - sister found a severely injured pigeon laying against her garage door during a torrential rain on Friday June 27th.

She's been taking care of it the best she can working full time. I started going over there on Wednesday to help out. It's easier for me to treat the bird here at home because the bird needed multiple treatments of Vetericyn. Alex has been on broad spectrum antibiotics since last Saturday. Wounds were flushed with saline and povidone. Maggot experience was brief and that problem has been solved. Am using Vetericyn spray (since Thursday) to irrigate and treat the worst wound which is under Alex's right wing.

Sister and I have been praying fervently for this bird so at this point I want to publicly thank the angels and saints who have been protecting Alex and guiding me and my sister. Also shout out to Chewy and Foy's Pigeon Supplies for the rapido shipping of every product that I've ordered in the last week

Alex has lice and I dipped him/her last night.

I have helped out many birds since I entered the bird phase of my life 16 years ago. This bird was knocking on heaven's door and I am convinced that St Francis sent that bird to my sister's yard where she would see it. The wounds are healing and I'm sure as I type this the lice are dying. Alex is baby gated away from the rest of my flock and all surfaces have been treated in that room.

I don't know if Alex is male or female. Alex has green eyes and I don't know if that's because he/she just has green eyes or if he/she is a baby and the eyes will change to dark orange. Do I think Alex will live? Yes. Do I think Alex will ever fly again? That I'm less confident about. Will there be a place for Alex if he/she cannot return to the wild? Yes.

Just wanted to explain why I was MIA the past couple of days.

hello all

wow just heard a POSSIBLE problem in the future. seems these forms may close down. sometime was written at top of a page. that is all i know, these forums got me thru the pandemic, there was life left outside of the 4 walls of the house.

not much else today

did chores, hung clothes out, all dried, all down,all folded and put away.

I think you are the angel/saint for caring for all these birds.😇 And apparently your sister has some of those genes too!👍

If anyone can pull Alex through, it's you. It sounds like you have your work cut out for you. Keep us updated.
