That made total sense....Not

My husband usually has lunch on Mondays with a friend of his. They are both in their 70's. He has mentioned a couple of times his concern over what appears to him to be declining cognitive abilities of his friend; however, I would say some of the things he mentions my husband has also done. So, not sure where that leaves my husband.

Anyways, on Monday (Memorial Day) he told me he had lunch with his friend and they might go to the shooting range afterwards. But then, he returned fairly early so I asked were they not going to the range. He says no, his friend had a fall and hit his head and wanted to go to the Doctor. I asked "Did this fall happen while he was with you?", thinking maybe he should've taken his friend to the doctor rather than letting him drive off on his own with a possible head injury. "No, he fell last night." I respoinded "So, he thought it was smart to have lunch first before going to the doctor?" Makes perfect sense, right?

Maybe he had an appt time that allowed him to meet your husband as planned, apparently he wasn't in pain or feeling dizzy so he just followed up with his Dr. after a fall...that's the right thing to do so I give him credit for taking care of it.

From my associations with hundreds of men, this is not solely an age factor. I could tell at least 100 stories about them. First off, most men do not like to go to any doctor of any kind. Why? Too many reasons to list, but learning they are vulnerable is 1 of them.

Cognitive Development has a lot to do with this also. How they grew through the years/dependent or independent, along with their belief systems. Had 1 that had the gas cap stolen off his car. He rationalized that it would be ok to take one from another car and it was ok.

This story about your husband's friend doesn't surprise me at all. I have actually been a part of one similar, but turned out to be very serious. One of my hockey players hurt his ankle and 1 of my Orthopedic Surgeon players checked it out. He had him put ice on it until our game was over, and then this doctor was going to take him to the hospital and check him out.

He decided it was best if he drove home. Found out, from his wife, when he got home he could not even get out of his truck. She managed to move him and drove him to the ER. Ended up he had 2 different fractures in his ankle.

If your husband is doing similar things, is this something new? If not, his cognitive development, may be happening.

@hckynut my husband is one of those who refuses to go to the doctor. Luckily, he is in good health, but he never gets those hidden things checked like blood pressure. So, the reason he isn't on any medications may not be because he doesn't need any. He also looks down at the medications I take. I'll come in from my physical and say my doctor is happy with all my numbers and he'll ask does that mean I can get off of any of my meds.

I'm trying to keep up with him. He's very smart. It's just sometimes the little things make me think, hmmmm. And, he too has fallen a couple of times recently. The first time was at night and after several beverages, so I guess that's understandable. He ended up with a broken nose from that and had to get plastic surgery on his lower eyelid several months later after everything had healed. I made him go to the ER after that fall.

And then, just a couple of weeks ago he missed one of the step-downs on our sidewalk in broad daylight. We've lived here for 25 years. Maybe he just wasn't paying attention. But, I also noticed today how he seemed to be holding onto the staircase railing with both hands as he came down kinda sideways like he didn't want to turn all the way around to walk down normally.

His friend was at one time diagnosed with Parkinsons, but his VA doctors have changed their mind on that although they really don't have any answers for him. He already walks with a cane.

I would just think that if you had a fall bad enough that you felt like a doctor needed to check you out, that you would want to do that immediately, not after lunch the following day.

@Icegoddess @Plenty of people wait until they see more signs that make them think they need to see a doctor. Some people think that whatever is bothering them is not serious, when it is serious or think that something is serious, when it is not. Some people feel fine after a fall but wait to see a doctor to get checked anyway.

@mom2four0418 I agree and thank you for pointing this out. With no offense intended, lumping the sexes together is no different than 'profiling' based on other characteristics, and foibles attributed to both men and to women as a function of their gender often are both insulting and inaccurate. Not normally something I'd jump on but this stopped being 'cute' a long time ago.

I like to think men in their 70's have lived long enough to know a serious fall from one that is medically inconsequential. But them my reality brain cells remind me of some of the older men I know.

I know not all men live the type life where injuries are a regular part of their life. That said, it still amazes me how little understand about these things when it comes to their own bodies, like the story I told in my first post in this thread. The man declined going to the hospital with our Orthopod friend to be taken care of, only to end up with a Bone Doc he didn't know, hours later.

Fortunately I have paid close attention when my body is talking to me. My fall a few weeks ago(ice skating now) I had no problem telling my 2 friends there I knew I had broken a rib, it just wasn't an emergency, not yet anyways.
