FIRST TOILET PAPER AND NOW GAS

I can't believe the long lines here to fill up with gas. Some stations are already out of gas. As expected in these short tempered times, fights are breaking out at the pumps.

News reports say tanker trucks are on the way to help. Meanwhile my driving has been curtailed until the situation resolves itself.

I remember this in the 70's. I was going to college and my DH working. Both of us had the same "odd" number on our car license plates and were forced to carpool! My car has basically been sitting for days anyway but lately I have been venturing out, hope this does not make me stay in. ☹️⛽️

Am hoping this gas crunch will be corrected soon. Had plans to travel this summer to visit family and go to the beach . The lines of angry people at the pumps during the 1970's was bad , don't want to experience that agian. There is a trueism in the old saying " history repeats itself " .

It's deja vu all over again! We had recently moved to Northern Virginia around the 70's gas crisis and our apartment was right on a Metrobus line, so we could take the bus to work. However, we needed our car to go grocery shopping. We'd get up early on Saturday when we needed to get gas and, sometimes, we were the last car in line for that day.

We're supposed to leave for the Outer Banks on Friday, staying over at Williamsburg that night. We can get to Williamsburg on a half tank of gas and then to Duck on the remaining half tank, but we'd be arriving on fumes in a best case scenario. We're planning to drive as far as Fredericksburg, then stop to fill up, if possible. If it isn't possible, we'll come home and wait until this situation is resolved before proceeding to Duck. Luckily, our vacation rental's for 2 weeks, so we have some wiggle room. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

OK...Am I the only one who is thinking....

Last year, work from home, low gas usage...No holiday travel...low gas usage...no vacations...low gas usage

Gas companies hacked their own account to create shortage---then high prices...

Where is the governmental oversight on this??

@Shanus - Horrible. My husband filled up our cars yesterday. He drives ~80 miles round trip daily. If it will be too hard to get gas, he can always use mine as I still don't go out much and shop online. He usually stops at the grocery stores, PetSmart on his way home from work, so that helps, too - no sole trips to go food shopping, etc.

Don't remember the specifics, but in the 70's when the gas shortage hit, I was 20 - 21 y/o and working in the Credit department for a bank (no customer interaction.) I had always purchased gas from the same station, which my father said I was paying too much for, but it was convenient and I liked the owner who always serviced my car. He would call me at work to say that it's a good time to come over for gas; no waiting at all.

Being that I didn't work directly with customers, it was fine to leave and go across the street to fill up. I told my father that, sometimes it pays to pay that little extra I did if it meant that I didn't have to worry about gas for my car...he agreed. I admit, I had it easy.

I never go below a half tank of gas before filling up again. Something my husband taught me. Our cars tanks are full. Thankfully. No gas to be had around here. All gas stations we came across were roped off.

Ridiculous comparison....no one is showing up with a thrrmos & dixie cups to hoard gas in their pantry. We depend on gas, we'll always need it & the idea it should-can be eliminated is denying reality.

Actually my friend lives in Georgia and said her husband happened to be at a "Racetrack" yesterday when a tanker pulled in to fill up. No gas until that point and all the gas pump handles were covered. But one issue there for the past several days that her husband has witnessed (he's a driver so needs gas frequently) is people not only filling up their gas tanks in cars but then also filling up separate containers to hoard. Shouldn't be allowed during something like this.

He never mentioned any fights at the pumps though.

Most of Florida's gasoline is supplied by Gulf coast refineries via boat, not the pipeline.

If this isn't affecting Florida, why did the governor declare a state of emergency over this? There are news articles all over about long lines at some Florida gas stations.

I was listening to a national radio station this morning. They were talking to a guy on the phone who was waiting in line in Florida to get gas. The guy said he had been in line 38 minutes and there were still 4 cars ahead of him. He said the gas was coming out in a trickle so it was taking a really long time for cars to fill up.

I'm sure adjusting the pumps so the gas trickles out is being done on purpose.

I remember the gas shortage of the 1970s really well. I was in my late 20s and "under employed in sunny San Diego". Fortunately I only lived five blocks to work so frequently I rode my bike. Roomy and I carpooled for errands. Both of my primary cars now are hybrids so gas goes pretty far. Not affected by this in AZ but our gas is still $3.05.

Two days ago DH mentioned finding a decent camper at a lot in FL, flying down to buy it, and driving the camper back. He's looking for a Rialta, not found commonly here in the midwest. And my idea for a quick trip was the Outer Banks. Well, I guess we will be staying home. Killed that argument deader than a door nail.

There is NOT a gas shortage, there is a distribution problem due to the pipeline being shut down. Any "shortages" have been created by panic and to some extent hoarding.

With a few exceptions (service station tanks already low for example) if people had gone about their normal routines instead of rushing to the gas station there would be enough to meet daily needs, at least at this time.
