NEW LAPTOP....OMG!!

DH gifted me with an early holiday gift...a Microsoft laptop. Nice gift, yes, but I haven't had a "computer" in 10 years. I've made do with my beloved Apple IPAD...Yep. Not the same!! I have a mouse to use or not. The icons are all different and he has not completely set it up, so my most crucial spell check is not here!

Bear with me. I'm learning. I keep hitting the square in the middle below the keyboard which either moves everything or deletes it. I'm not used to using it as a touch screen yet, so the mouse is it for now. Right click left click.

If you see weird spellings, lack of punctuation, triple spacing, etc., I'm still learning. As most of you know, technology is not one of stong suits.

What I can't understand is how you managed those long correctly spelled posts with a laptop. I can't even get through a Garmin screen without making a mistake. You will love your new computer!

I use my Macbook and iPad daily....but I have a Dell laptop I use occasionally for certain projects. There is always a learning curve for me going back to the Dell!

@Shanus I can't remember when I last used a mouse in my own home - maybe 7+ years ago, maybe even more. I know this is the second laptop I've had for which I never bought a mouse.

I am using my iPad for more and more tasks, but I prefer the vision ease of the bigger screen here on this Dell, not so much for the forum but for lots of small print and numbers.

@millieshops I know my IPAD didn't have "Word", so composing letters was an issue. For business, it was difficult keeping "folders" and client info. I know the mouse is an antique because it seems mouse pads are obsolete. Can't find one, so mine does a lot of slipping and sliding. As soon as possible, I'll get the hang of that "felt square" below the keyboard and use that.

Somewhere on here, there's a way I can bill clients and keep records of that. I've been doing that by hand. Really bad bookkeeping.

@millieshops Thanks for the boost of confidence. Sometimes I envy the kids who grew up with computers and know no other way BUT their handwriting stinks!!! There's a downside to everything. If my granddaughters send me a letter (on real paper), I can barely read it.

@Shanus Have you considered getting a MINI-MOUSE ????? They are only about 2x3 inches, and slide right along the space below your keyboard. I am OLD and just can't use that finger-pad thingie.....and the mini was the answer to my dreams. Around $10. di

@Shanus What a wonderful gift, enjoy! I have a bluetooth small mouse that I use made by microsoft so nothing to stick into laptop. I can use the pad on my mac but am much faster with my little mouse.

@Desertdi DH puchased a little red wireless mouse and a lapdesk that has a "suede" pad on the surface next to were laptop fits. Same thing?

@Shanus I've been using my old MacBook air...it's about 7 years old , still works great (knock on wood!) and is only 11" ...like a large tablet but with a key board. I don't think they make them this size anymore or I might consider getting a new one at some point when this one goes.

I had an iPad but really didn't like it too much and ended up giving it to DH. I also have a Microsoft desk top that I use for my business...each is so different from the next with their own little challenges.

@Shanus I don't know. I don't have a lapdesk. My laptop sits sideways on top of a 2-drawer file cabinet....and I use the mouse right on the surface of the laptop. di

@haddon9 I had a huge desk top computer many years ago with a keyboard that was in a drawer that pulled out below. It was great except I had no other room on my desk. With lots of practice, I'll enjoy this, but it doesn't text, right? Still need my IPAD or phone nearby.

@Shanus No it doesn't text but I do love my small laptop...I'm on it right now and if I suddenly get a text or notification, my phone is sitting right next to me.

ETA: I only use the touch pad...no mouse. At first it was hard to get used to but now it's second nature and faster and much more simple (to me anyway) than using a mouse.

@haddon9 That's my goal. Didn't know what it was called...hum, touch pad. Think I've been calling it the "felt square under the keyboard". LOL Yes, the mouse does a lot of slipping and sliding and the biggest nuisance is remembering to turn it off.

@Shanus I still use a mouse with my laptop. I hate the touch pad, maybe because I'm left handed but it seems as it takes twice as long to hit the target with the cursor.

I love using only laptops for my online stuff. I hope they don't stop making them.

I also use a mouse and am left-handed so I like that I can put my mouse where I want it (on the left side) and turn off the scrolly pad. I just cannot do the scrolly pad. My Logitech Marble Mouses that I've been using for 20 years are the best. I don't like those old mouses that you have to move around on a mousepad, and you end up with wrist problems. I have arthritis and that's enough.
