Should I report them?

Door to door sales... roofing... my neighbors use these people and were delighted with the results. I allowed for an appointment to check the status of my roof. Came in checked attic, roof on the outside... took measurments. AND THEN... showed pictures of damage in attic and insisted I better do something fast.. inside and out. Total price $45 grand... lowered it if I SIGNED RIGHT AWAY. Refused to give me paperwork. Refused to give me a day to think about it. I told them to leave.

Checked with BBBureau... came up scam.... false pictures... higher prices than normal AND NO DAMAGE TO BE FIXED. I called in a local roofer and he confirmed my suspicions.

SHOULD I REPORT THEM AND TO WHOM. And my neighbors are highly educated with high intelligence.... I guess no common sense.

Perhaps it was my silver hair or my neighborhood general status around here... I am a retired teacher... 30 years of service. Not easy to fool me. But after thinking about it... can I save someone else by reporting. They even had a brochure that said they were associated with Sams Club who I did call. But apparently the associations are local and not national

Report to better business bureau. You will have to write exactly what happened. I do not think they need your name. I once reported a company and got satisfaction in 24 hours. Of course you just want to help others, not want any satisfaction from the company. I always check the BBB when hiring a company.

@bonnielu I think I would just ask them to quit harassing me and I would use that word "HARASSING" so they know you mean business and if they bother you again, you can report them to police. I don't know about your area, but in mine, door-to-door sales persons post 9/11 is unwarranted and illegal. Now, if it's the kids selling something for school or the church kids taking up canned food for the needy, that's different, but these peddlers --- no.....

If you decide to I'd suggest contacting your state's attorney general's office, consumer affairs office. Since you weren't damaged (smart lady!) you won't be involved in any legal action but it doesn't hurt to pass on your experience. They may already be on a list.

The people who don't get second opinions drive me crazy. But then I was born skeptical.....

$45 grand.........gulp.....you must have a HUGE house.....6 bedrooms and 4 baths with a library .... by any chance?

I have a 3 bedroom and new roof 3 years ago $9K and with the best quality shingles.

When a company puts the PRESSURE to sign NOW..........start running in the other direction.......FAST AS YOU CAN.

NO is the word for this.........shop around.

Are you on a Neighborhood group aka Nextdoor? If so, you could report your experience there. You don't have to mention your neighbors if you're concerned they would read it. While they might figure out that they have been taken from your post, at least they won't feel like you have told the whole neighborhood group about it.

No small- medium house. 23,000 square feet, four bedroom, 2 1/2 baths. I really thought there might be a SMALL problem. Live in the woods, some moss on my roof so when they came to the door... I was polite and told them I would call. I called all right, two neighbors who vouched for them. When the appointment was made I figured I would get an estmate... from them.. and follow up by LOCALS. What a ride!!!! I cannot even imagine why they thought I would believe them. Oh well my entertainment for the morning. But thinking about it perhaps I should report them or atleast alert someone. I did post on NEXTDOOR but got no responses.

Another way to get the word out would be to call your local news station. Many of them have someone that specializes in makeing these sorts of scams public. At least it would alert a lot of people to be on the lookout.

Report them to the local BBB. They keep a record even if the company does not belong.

As someone else said, I'd report this company to your state's attorney general - consumer affairs. I did that once with an auto warranty company that preyed on my mother, and I had excellent results. While you weren't scammed, I'm sure they would still want to know the shady (illegal) practices of this company that is operating in your state. In my case, they had lawsuits already in progress against the company and they were very quick to have my mother compensated for the sham. The company was eventually forced out of business and declared bancruptcy.

Reputable companies do not need to go door-to-door seeking business, and they sure don't pressure people to "sign up now, or else....".

I would report them definitely to the BBB and also to your local authorities (they can tell you exactly who to report them to). They are definitely scamming people. 45 Grand? That's the tip off right there, plus no paperwork, etc.

@bonnielu I absolutely would report them. You may be saving a senior citizen from being scammed. Many are too trusting and easily scared if told their house has major damage.

Please report them and don't wait. If anyone has experience with scammers they should be reported, otherwise they will continue to rip off and scare people.

My parents who are elderly and less suspicious and a lot more trusting then I am, almost lost $2500 in a phone scam. Thankfully, the clerk at the store who was working the money order counter told them she thought it was a scam and warned them to not transfer the money. Everyone needs to speak up and help each other if we can.

Other than the BBB, who would you report them to? They made an offer, you wisely declined. You voluntarily let them into your home and onto your property. I don't see where they did anything wrong. It's not at all uncommon for home repair works pressure people to sign the contract immediately. You didn't sign the contract so they weren't going to give it to you.

@bonnielu @Your state will have a contractors licensing bureau. If they are legitimate contracting company you can ask the licensing board how to file a complaint. Your state might have some laws they broke regarding contract laws. If they misrepresent themselves they are breaking the law. You can call to find out what to do. It's unlikely that police will get involved unless you suffer a loss. The phony photos area common tactic with these con artists. You could try the police and see if you get lucky. These cons don't show up for four if they get charged anyway and they travel around the country.
