I just received a notice that 143 million people will be receiving the 2020 Census in their mail boxes between March 12 - March 20.

When my kids were little i worked once for the Census Bureau because it was only a few hours a day and paid well...and i was able to do it while they were in school. Had to go to EACH house and speak to whoever was home, etc. and ask certain questions, etc. I really can't see how "legit" a mail in Census will end up being.................

@kelsey17 I remember doing a mail in census in 2010. Isn't this how it always is? Did people really get counted house by house years ago? That's a lot of work!

I asked my mom who's in her 60s if someone ever came to the house and she said no.

She only remembers filling out a "very nosy, very long, questionnaire" (her words).

@MezzieStarr The census gets mailed out to homes. If it isn't returned in a timely manner, individual workers go door to door and attempt to collect the information that way.

I had a dear retired friend that used to do this. He really enjoyed it. He was a real gentleman--used to get all dressed up in his special occasion suit--and had excellent results obtaining responses from folks that had been reluctant to participate.

I enjoyed hearing about your friend having worked for the government for 38 years.

It sounds like he was proud to be doing his job.

The Census Bureau is not far from where I live and I passed it almost every day going to work. I always felt a happy connection to the people doing that work, even though I never set foot in the building.

I got mine today and did it online.

There are 2 versions: long form and short form. I got the short one.

@RedTop I was sent a code to use online....never offered mail in. I would rather mail it in. I found this info about sending it in by mail:

While we encourage online response to the NSCG, we will automatically send you a paper questionnaire if you do not complete the survey online in a few weeks.

When you receive the paper questionnaire, use a pen with blue or black ink, or a #2 pencil to fill out the form. Mail it back in the postage-paid return envelope. If you have trouble answering a question, call us at 1-888-262-5935 or email us at nscg@census.gov, and we will help you.

You do not need to mail the paper form back if you completed the survey online or by telephone.

Also, received an online code. Says it takes about 10 minutes.

At least, it is something to do!

I got mine in the mail today. It said it'll take about 10 minutes to complete on-line. I remember doing it many years ago and it was a very, long lengthy process.

Got it yesterday and did it online today. Quick, easy and under ten minutes. I remember as a child, in the 1950s, going to the Census Bureau in Suitland MD. My Dad was a computer engineer and helped assemble the first mainframe computer (Univac I) at the Census bureau. When I walked into the huge room where the fan cooler computer was located my circle skirt (with 70 yds of crinoline) blew up around my face. How times have changed!
