Birthday Present Suggestions

Hi Everyone,

My daughter-in-law, who is in her mid 40's has a birthday soon and I have no clue what to get her so I hope you sweet ladies and gents can help me.

They are quite capable of purchasing anything they want so my son always states I do not have to get them anything. In fact they pay for a cleaning lady to come over and clean my home! But I do want to get her something to show her I think she is special.

She goes to the gym, has bad allergies and asthma , so flowers are out of the question. She is a vegeterian except fish due to a heath issue. She is a CEO and takes very good care of herself. Quite a beautiful woman and classic She loves athlectic wear, but wears the expensive brands such as LULUMON, ( sorry, I may have misspelled the brand).

Any ideas? HELP!!!!!

how about a nice new gym bag? lululemon has a nice selection of bags, backpacks, and duffels.

do they have children? if so, how about offering them your babysitting services for a weekend so she and your son can have some alone time? you could even add a gift card to her favorite vegetarian restaurant.

@Calcgirl Get her gift certificate for the gym wear she likes. It doesn't have to be an amount enough to pay completely but will show her you care enough to know what she likes. Maybe get her a gift certificate for a restaurant she likes that has vegetarian food. You could also ask your son for suggestions.

@Calcgirl Give her the gift of time, go to lunch or do a spa day. You could get them a home delivery meal service for a week or month. This can be customized to the way they eat. It would be a great time saver

She sounds like she doesn't need anything, and your son has stated you don't need to get them anything. So, I would just get her something just to show that you care. I would say a nice card with nice sentiment on it would be better than any material things.

Does she have a favorite charity? If so, how about a donation in her name to her favorite charity.

I would honor their wishes.

Present her w/ a card...writing how much she means to you.

Those sentiments carry much more weight than an actual gift.

Find out about a vegetarian restaurant near her that gets good reviews and get her a gift certificate to that, or a good seafood place.

It sounds like gifts aren't necessary but I understand you want to mark the occasion somehow. Can you all go out to lunch or dinner? Give a nice card and enjoy the time spent together.

Get her a nice card and write her a personal note in it. Then get a Visa gift card (she can use it anywhere) and tell her in the card you want her to use it to treat herself to something she really will enjoy.

@Calcgirl, do you live close to your son and DIL? Do you cook?

If the answer is yes to both questions ask son and DIL (and family if there are children at home) and prepare a vegetarian meal. That would be one way to demonstrate how much you care for her and honor the no gifts necessary your son has expressed.

Since real flowers are out, how about a silk flower arrangement? There are some beautiful artificial flower arrangements in some of the gift shops/ flower shops I have been in recently. They would give a little touch of spring this time of year, and also last forever. Or, maybe a pretty table runner, new placemats, or a special throw or pillow? A favorite soap or lotion? Whatever you come up with I am sure she will love it. Let us know what you decide on.

I don't know how anyone can help you since we don't know anything about the woman. Does she wear perfume or cologne? If you know her favorite scent, you can buy her bottle. Does she wear jewelery? You could buy her a pendant or pair cute earrings from some chic little boutique that sells hand made jewelry.

@Calcgirl Sometimes when I'm stumped for a good gift idea, a check is perfect. She can purchase what she's had her eye on.

Are you familiar with the Beekman brand that both HSN and QVC sell? They make soaps and other body products that contain goat milk.

The nice part is that they use natural products, and you can buy unscented products also. Which sounds about right for your daughter in law.

You can purchase in all price ranges, and they have attractive packaging.

Maybe it's just me, but I can't imagine not giving my DIL a birthday gift. The OP's son said she didn't have to get anything, which is sweet. But it doesn't mean don't give her anything. It just means, "Don't feel you have to."

A card with something nice written inside is a good idea, of course, but I definitely would give her something else too. It doesn't have to be expensive or the most perfect gift ever, just something that ties in with one of her interests. It will be nice for her to feel that her MIL pays attention to what she's interested in.

For me, giving a gift is not just for the recipient. Acknowledging someone and how special they are to me is something I enjoy doing. It's her birthday! She should get a gift from her MIL!

(And no spa day unless she's sure it's something the DIL would enjoy. A lot of people assume all women would love that, which is not true.)
