Too often, in-laws get a bad rap.

My MIL and FIL are ten years younger than my parents were. My mom and dad have passed, and I feel blessed to still have my in-laws. I couldn't love them more if they were my own. Their love and support has never wavered over the decades. We'll be spending a couple of weeks with them in June and I'm so looking forward to it.

It seems, too often, in-laws get a bad rap.

Does anyone want to share good things about in-laws?

My in-laws have passed. FIL was a gem of a man. I was his first "daughter", having had two sons and no siblings of his own. Loved by everyone, with good reason.

MIL- not so much.

@house_cat What a NICE post! I don't have in-laws, but have heard stories, both good and bad. I'm so happy for you that you hit the jackpot! Thanks for sharing. Why not do something special for them, just because? (you probably already do!)

I wished my in-laws liked us. My FIL died early on in our marriage. My MIL wanted nothing to do with her only son, me and our kids. She died alone thousands of miles away from her kids. Very sad.

@house_cat What a nice thing to say about your inlaws. Have a great visit with them.

My husband's parents were gone before we married (dh is 14 years older than me)....then both of my parents died at young ages! I envy those that have family..siblings, inlaws, etc., that they get along with and are able to spend time together.

I must say being married and divorced twice, I always had the greatest inlaws, but the husbands, not so much. My first inlaws have passed and though I am no longer in touch with the second ones I still love them and have deep regard for them. They were all wonderful people.

I don't have any family that I'd even WANT to stay at hteir house for a couple of weeks.

I had a wonderful MIL who was a really wonderful human being. It doesn't surprise me that my husband is her son. He is very much like her..

How wonderful! Isn't that what life's all about? I can say the same of my MIL and my husband... I hope my future DILs can say the same some day.

My FIL was a good man, ruined by an overbearing wife; MIL deserved her bad rap.

My husband and our daughters are among the few good credits to her name. She alone was the most difficult aspect of our marriage, and I was thankful my husband was not a mama’s boy, and for the 6 miles between our houses.

She passed 8 years ago, and my memories of her are unchanged. Our daughters do not have fond memories of their grandmother either.

You are fortunate. I once had great relationship with my MIL but it didn't last long. Basically we have no relationship now but I do go through the motions for hubby's sake. Luckily, they retired to ME so we aren't near each other. I think my relationship with my MIL taught me how to be a MIL to my two SIL's.

You're not alone.

I only have 1 sister and my 'Mommy Dearest' (if she's still alive), who I've had no relationship with at all for at least 15 years.

My MIL is the Mom I never had and I love her dearly!

My in-laws are fantastic .I will use my MIL as an example as to how I will act and treat any future DIL's. Should the time come that either (or both) need help with care, I would consider it an honor to have them move in and do just that.

My MIL's carbon monoxide detector went off last night. She wanted DH to come over to fix it. He can't fix something like that. We told her to call the Fire Dept. but she did not want to. She told DH she would call him back in 30 mins. I told DH you better go over there & call the Fire Dept because if she has a leak she won't wake up in the morning. She had a faulty carbon monoxide dectector so DH bought a new one to take over there today.

She told him he did not need to come over & she hated to bother us or make me mad. LOL!!! DH said she was not mad she's the one that told me to get over here to take care of it.

She's 89 now so are things she cannot take care of herself.

I doubt my MIL would move in with us or any or her kids.

She had her DH's mom living with them & did not like it. It did not last long.

They ended up buying a lot across the street from theirs & moved a house in on that lot for her to live in. Her youngest daughter lives there now.

When dating, I became fast friends with my boyfriend's parents (who became my in-laws) and his brothers. They were kind, funny and loved each other. When my boyfriend proposed, I always thought his entire family had (almost) encouraged him! They adored me (and vice-versa) and I had become the daughter (and sister) they never had.

To my delight my in-laws and my parents also really liked each other! It certainly made my life easier during holidays and when we would return to Lincoln for visits. Don't think I could have chosen better in-laws if I had tried. After they retired and moved to Arkansas, there were many trips to their lake-side home. We usually rented a condo. Often I would cook for everyone in "our" condo, which saved my MIL the trouble of hosting us. Other times we simply took them out for meals, which they enjoyed.

We later realized their retirement funds were far more limited than anticipated and began helping them out financially, as well. That was a hard pill for my husband's dad to accept, but in the long-run he was so grateful to be able to stay in their own home. Gotta love a proud man (who shed a tear with my husband's gesture of affection and concern).
