Red Cardinal Visits

My husband has had his dear friend on his mind who passed abruptly 15 years ago. Sons were in the same class in high school and grew up knowing each other since age 6. Husband's been doing a lot of landscaping. When friend comes to mind he'll see a red cardinal fly near him, land and look at him. It's happened enough times to make him curious. Someone at work told him the legend of the cardinal's visit. I knew a little about this, but it was endearing to hear husband with that logical, engineering, MBA mind speak about the cardinal's presence and how wonderful it would be if it was his friend sending a message: Cardinal is a representative of a loved one who has passed. When you see one, it means they are visiting you. They usually show up when you most need them or miss them. They also make an appearance during times of celebration as well as despair to let you know they will always be with you.

I truly believe in the Cardinal visits. I was recently seeing them quite frequently when I was having an issue. I always ask my dad what he would do, he passed 3 years ago, and when I made my decision a Cardinal landed on the fence in front of my kitchen window. There have been many times I will think about my dad or stepmom and a Cardinal will appear. I find it very comforting.

Cardinals are very special to me, too. They represent the spiritual presence of my dearest late husband.

I knew of no mythology or folklore associated with the cardinal when I began noticing the presence of the bird after my husband's death. And yes, it typically appeared at important moments when I needed or wanted him near.

My thinking along this vein began after my beloved father passed away -- about 25 years before my husband died. Once again, I knew of no mystical or magical thinking involving butterflies when my father died. However, after he passed, I noticed that a butterfly would come near me and linger, sometimes even landing on my forearm. It happened often. I didn't tell anyone of my experience for weeks until I finally shared this phenomenon with my mother.

After that time, I have read many times that such experiences are not all that rare and folks share the same feelings about visiting cardinals and butterflies. Nature takes on an additional beauty with this experience.

Here in Dallas, I’ve been seeing several in my neighborhood.

I never knew of the connection to loved ones.

Cardinals were my late mother's favorite bird. I put a special feathered cardinal ornament on my tree each Christmas in her memory. Every time I see one, I think of her. Recently, I have had a group of four very young ones visiting my birdfeeder; there must be a nest nearby....we all need the comfort of feeling our loved one nearby us in spirit...so glad your husband feels comforted

Hi, I'm new here and I hope it's ok if I share.

My mother passed away in 2014. In 2016, I relocated for my job, about 1300 miles away. There was a lot of turmoil after her death(still Is), I was sitting outside my new home sobbing my heart out. I heard a noise and looked up and a red cardinal was sitting on the fence. That bird sat there for about 15 minutes, while I yelled, sobbed and screamed. Once I had calmed myself down, it flew away. I have no doubt that was my mother.

There have been other times, but nothing as great as this.

@sidsmom. You have cardinals in the Dallas area? I lived in Houston over 30 years and we surely never saw them there.

About five years ago, I had to make a visit to an elementary school I'd never been to before. I was early, so I pulled into a parking space that faced a vast expanse of trees. As I sat killing time, I noticed a red cardinal in a tree. Then another appeared which was followed by a third. Within about two minutes, there were over a dozen of the red birds. I was speechless and almost brought to tears. I have always believed that cardinals are visits from our loved ones. Anyway, a few weeks later I decided to visit that same spot again and guess what? Not a single cardinal appeared.

I assumed! They fly by so quickly...I’m not a bird person, so..is there another type of reddish bird in the North TX area?

Cardinal was my dad's favorite bird. I have so many where I live now that it would be hard for me to say this has a special meaning. However, when I lived up North, it never failed every year on Yankee opening day there was a cardinal either in a tree, on our birdfeeder on the deck or near to where I walked.

@jeanlake: I thought I heard something about cardinals & loved ones who've paased, so reading your post couldn't have come at a better time. I've been dealing with a family issue the past few weeks, & missing/appreciating my parents' wisdom & guidance, &, just when I'm having those thoughts, I'll look out the window & see a cardinal! I'd dismiss it at first, but it kept happening! It's comforting to think that maybe they are "paying a visit" to say that everything's going to work out okay! It's a nice thought...

My parents favorite bird was a cardinal. They loved to watch all kinds of birds, but they loved the cardinals.

Last year my dad passed on July 4th. That was a Tuesday. Was so busy with family & friends, that I wasn't really home much until Sunday. I was sitting on my couch and pretty soon, a cardinal landed in the tree in my front yard. It wasn't there long, but I know it was my dad letting me know things were fine.

Then a couple of weeks ago, I had to have a/c serviced. I know I need a new one, but will have to wait a few more months. Of course, the salesman wanted to sell my a unit waaaaay over & above what I need. Told him I couldn't afford that, and was going to wait to get what I need. Had a couple of other things go wrong and was feeling very depressed. I went out on my deck the next day and a cardinal sat on my garage for a little while. I know it was my parents letting me know that things will work out.

@Foolywooly11 Enjoyed your story. Husband adored his grandpa, who left the earth when he was my husband's current age. Anyhoo -- husband has been thinking of his grandfather since his recent birthday. When he sees multiple cardinals, he smiles, thinking of his friend and his grandfather. Regardless of the reality, it's a lovely way to once again feel the presence of someone who has passed.

I live in the South, Cardinals visit my yard almost every day year round, I love them! Usually more male than female, I like to think it is my father checking on me since he died so young and I miss him so much!

I am a bird lover, and the cardinal is state bird for both Ohio and S. Carolina. When we retired to SC from OH a red male cardinal and his girlfriend took up residence in our backyard. He was very territorial and would flutter around our high sky windows pecking at the glass. Was rather annoying because went on for years ;-) Last year we moved again, from SC to Florida, and I think our cardinal came with us! He is back to living in my yard and fluttering around my high window in our great room, pecking away. We would love for him to take a little flying vacation, but he shows no signs of leaving, and I've read that cardinals never fly more than 5 miles away from their home yard. Lucky us. If our cardinal is the spirit of a departed loved one, I wish that family member would please choose another venue to use for his/her appearances. And Daddy, if that cardinal is you, I'm gonna get ya back when i get to Heaven.
