Legally blind

This is the diagnosis that my mom received.Now comes the selling of products for the blind.She went to a meeting and was sold a 70.00 magnifying glass and they want to sell her a Daisy recorder that reads books.She doesn’t have a computer or internet and the only info I can find seems to state that you need that.Does anyone have any experience or advice on this equipement.

@dex. Stop! There's another thread new today on services for the Blind. Both my parents were legally blind so I'm very familiar with what's available. I'll find it and be back.

There is no mention on that thread of this daisy recorder that my mom is talking about.She lives in Canada and I am in USA so I can’t be ther right now to help her choose.She is very low tec.She has never touched a computer or cell phone and I am concerned they will sell her stuff she can’t afford or use.

Do you have a Division for the Blind in your state or county. My sister has been legally blind since college and that's where she goes for her vision assessments and then the counsellors their help her choose the assistive devices that she needs. She has all types of things that make things easier for her.

Perhaps I dont understand this topic, but my Mom (now deceased) was diagnosed with macular degeneration in both eyes un 1978. She was treated by a young retnia m,d. who had the very latest and new laser treatment. Nothing was promising for her. However her State Assoc. for the Blind assessed her condition and provided her a magnifying glass, a reader like a computer that magnified newsprint, etc, and talking books, along with visits offering support during monthly visits. This was provided free I suspect the doctors office contacted the association..

In my area, there is a radio station for people who are legally blind or have problems reading. They provide units for the individual's home so that people in need can have the benefit of listening to all kinds of material. The organization has volunteers who record varying kinds of material including magazines, newspapers, sale flyers, short stories, stock market reports, etc. See if her area has anything similar!

My mom is in Canada so the support and benefits could be different .I will be traveling there soon to spend time looking into all of this.I am wondering if she couldn’t be getting some of these helpful aids free or at least with some assistance.I am hopeful in the meantime that she isn’t getting taken advantage of.She has blindness from Alzheimer’s....new one to me as I hadn’t heard of that.

Check to see if there is a non-profit in your Mom's area dedicated to services for the blind. Locally, we have an ABVI "association for the blind and visually impaired".

That would be a great resource.

I have been blind and I got audio books. I got library of congress books for the blind. Get audio books free through Amazon Prime.

@tobes I have MS and I was blind for a time with MS and then regained my eyesight. That happens occasionally with MS patients. PTL for return of my eyesight, though it is far from perfect. Big print, audio books and for some strange reason, one learns to cope with this condition. It is not easy, but it is better than deaf.

So sorry you have to compensate, but you sooud like a person who will make the best of things. My mom was the same ---by the way her hearing was impaired as well and she used two hearing aids. Like you, she was a strong woman and compensated for all her troubles in life.
