I usually send a check or gift card if I know a friend's teen is graduating, no invitation is necessary.

we could not get enough to my daughters graduation. they gave us four and we could get an addition one. we actually had 8 that wanted to attend. it is a shame, but not much we can do. we are all going out to dinner that night though to celebrate. we are then having a separate party next month to celebrate with other friends and family.

Do people still send out high school graduation announcements? My grandson will be graduating next month and he does not want a party. I suggested to my daughter that they send out announcements letting family and friends know he is graduating and where he will be going to college.

She said no, that isn't done anymore. And, it would look like they were looking for gifts. If they had a party people would give him gifts so what's the difference? Anyway, what are your thoughts on announcements?

I thought in getting an announcement, that that was your ticket to being invited to the graduation ceremonies. I could be wrong. It's been ages. If parents wanted a party, they let everyone know. We usually had it in tent covers outside to accommodate everyone. Food was under the canopy, if you did a card with money in it, it was a gift handed to the graduate. No box to just slide it into. You got to tell the graduate "good job".

I was thinking about announcements recently also. I have 2 grandkids graduating from high school and one from college. When I mentioned announcements they had no idea what I was talking about. I told them how there used to be formal announcements with a little card inserted with the name of the graduate. They just kind of smiled as they frequently do when I mention 'olden times'!

I sent announcements only for my DS' college graduations, and only to very close family members. The announcements were photo cards stating the date of graduation, the college, major and the honor. Both graduations were out of state, so other family members did not attend. Some sent checks, others did not. Both DSs requested not to have parties. They also preferred special restaurant dinners with closest family members following HS graduations.

@Graysonsmom: There will be plenty of time for gifts for fiance of a godson ?. Were it me, I would just send a card or note congratulating the graduate.

I wish more people sent them. We have friends across the U.S. and several have had children graduate high school over the past few years. I would have liked to send a gift as an acknowledgment of their achievement, had I known. A great gift for someone is a check for the year of graduation (eg $20.18)

For the person asking about a gift -- if you're close with the godson and his fiancee, by all means get her a gift; if not, it's not necessary.

Now it may be different if you decide you don't want a party at all.
