Peter Thomas Roth Trump Towers

Peter Thomas Roth who I adore, must live in or near Trump Towers. He had a live video on his Twitter yesterday during the Fire at Trump Towers. Sad that one person died in the fire and others are injured! He posted:

Home, safe with my family. What a crazy thing to experience here in NYC. My prayers go out to those families directly effected by this.

I know the news said at the time that it was built it was not a law to have them BUT I sure hope that he installs them now!!!

Nope, residences are not required to have them. Its up to each owner to put in sprinklers/alarms only if they want them.

we have a highrise condo at the beach that was built in the mid 70s. it is required that sprinklers be along all of the hallways AND every unit has to have smoke detectors (those that are wired into the entire building and personally installed detectors.)

i think it depends on where you live and what the ordinances are.

Exactly. Apparently the building was built before those requirements and then when they were brought about the 'owner' fought them and, 'somehow or other', managed to get grandfathered in so that the changes didn't have to be made.

The city’s Department of Buildings said Sunday the building did have working hard-wired smoke detectors, and that the fire department was first notified of the blaze by the detectors in the building’s heating and ventilation system. A cause had not yet been determined.

Fire sprinklers were not required in New York City high-rises when Trump Tower was completed in 1983. Subsequent updates to the building code required commercial skyscrapers to install the sprinklers retroactively, but owners of older residential high-rises are not required to install sprinklers unless the building undergoes major renovations.

Thanks, @MorningLover, for the info on the smoke alarms. I heard a report earlier today that a resident on the 40th floor wasn’t aware of a fire in the building until a friend called him.

You know, it costs money to retrofit. Unless one were mandated to do so, a good business man would never shell out bucks just to ensure the safety of his tenants. That would be silly. Besides, it's a "well-built building."

Trump Tower serves as the headquarters for The Trump Organization, and many members of the President's family live there or have lived there.
