Is that what it was???

Around 9:30am I heard what sounded like a bang and then a tractor trailor driving by. I looked out the front parlor window, but there was no one even driving on the road. Later, come to find out we had a 2.7 earthquake here in So. Maine and New Hampshire. Nothing shaking, just a loud noise and then rumblings for a few seconds. I probably would not have even known it happened if I was in the back of the house in the kitchen!

A few years back we had a big bang here too. I was doing dishes and we ran outside to see if a house had exploded. It's amazing how much noise the earth makes. Really scary. That is not normally a happening here.

Do you get them often in your neck of the woods? It can be unnerving if you’re not use to them. The last one I remember 2 yr ago I heard what I thought was an explosion outside the house and the kitchen floor moved enough for me to realize what was happening.

Earthquake booms! I've only heard one and mistakened it for a sonic boom from a fighter jet doing training maneuvers since we used to live near an AF base. This happened late at night. Rattled the windows with a short burst of loud force. Later on the news we learned it was a small quake.

I didn't know they came with a loud bang!

The only one I've been in (and not in CA!)

was when I lived in MD! not too many years ago.

And like @Noel7 said, it was like a train coming through the house!

I felt like I had totally lost control of my life! Like you are in a snowglobe-too shocked to be scared til afterwards.

After that, most everyone we knew got earthquake insurance. Of course we never got another one after that.

It was so unusual, I looked up a lot of things and learned that scientists say it is actually good for the earth to move a little every once in awhile (but this one wasn't little for MD, a 4. something, I know not large for CA), rather than never move or shift and then have a huge earthquake.

Whatever, they are all totally unnerving. I could never live in CA.

My aunt lives there and always points out that those on the east coast have just as many or more problems with the snow and ice.

I think its a matter of not being able to do a dang thing about it! (earthquakes that is).

And we didn't know what it was. We never thought omg an earthquake because we'd never been in one. We just thought what? Is the earth coming to an end? Are we in a sci-fi movie gone wrong?! We didn't know til afterwards what it was and heard on the news.

Here in OK we’ve had them too. As a matter fact we received a letter in November from our insurance company they were no longer going to cover earthquakes.

@OKPrincess- No, we very seldom get earthquakes. When we do they are on the small scale. Hardly noticeable at all. No shaking, just loud noises and rumblings. The last no longer then 20-30 seconds if that. It doesn't scare us, just a curiousity factor really.

@OKPrincess- Geeesh, was that a preemptive strike by the insurance company? Is Ok. one of the states being affected by fracking so the increase of small quakes? I thought Ok. was more in line for Tornados.

@SelahG- Yep, we are all fine. My husband was at work and was even closer to where the quake was centered, (many miles away)and he and the fellas in the office didn't even know about it....men, ah go figure. haha

@on the bay- I didn't know they came with a bang either! I always thought it was the train sound like Noel7 said too and the shaking. At least that is what I have always seen on tv when they interview people after it happens. I have to agree with your aunt. Every section of the country seems to have their own disastrous weather months. Drought and Wild fires, snow and ice, hurricanes and tornados. No matter where you live you have something to contend with.

I hear you, @Rockycoast! 😅 When I heard and slightly felt the earthquake boom, I shot up in bed saying, “WHAT WAS THAT?”

Husband didn’t even roll over, just mumbled: “Chill — a plane just went super sonic.”

But the dog cowering under the bed knew better. 😜 I feel so protected!

It isn't normal for Southern Maine either. So when it does happen it makes the afternoon news and the online paper. I found out about it by our town police asking if anyone had felt it.

We weren’t expecting it but I personally think it has a lot to do with fracking. There is a lot of drilling or basically reworking wells around the state. As far as tornados it seems other states get hit as much if not more than around here. It’s the OKC area that’s in the center of most tornado activity. Back to the quake insurance there were too many claims I guess. We are with Farmers so I don’t know about other insurance.

Could be. I'm from Nh and had never felt an earthquake in my life, and was in a class and felt what you did. Everyone else said it was due to a big truck lumbering by outside. I said I felt the Earth move. Turns out...the next day we learned I was right and there had been an earthquake.

Now that I live in CA...I always know!

You will be covered if you get a separate policy for it. I don't.....after 30 plus years of living in earthquake country, I think I've saved up enough $$$ by not paying for the extra insurance.

Yes - don’t know about other states, but in CA earthquake insurance is issued entirely separately from standard homeowners’ insurance.

It’s expensive enough (in a high likelihood state) and has a high enough deductible that it’s a tough pill to swallow for homeowners. I had it for awhile though as a renter, and it was surprisingly cheap for a renter - it would cover possessions if necessary, and a place to stay. I lived in an old building - one of the many that LA has ordered be retrofitted. It would have pancaked in a Big One. But since I was upstairs it would have been my downstairs neighbors in deep doo in that case.

Years ago when my kids were little we were all in my bedroom. My oldest, about 4, was jumping on my bed and my other child was in my arms. The headboard on my bed began to shake and bang on the wall and I felt the floor shaking. I yelled at my poor son to stop jumping on the bed! Later, I saw on the noon news that we had an earthquake here in lower Michigan.
