OPINIONS ON HAIRDRESSER SITUATION

I have come here from time to time over the years and have gotten a lot of good advice. Haven't asked for opinions in in awhile but need advice now.

I have been going to my stlylist since 2005 and for the most part I like her work. ( As she and have have aged together it now takes her about 1/2 hour longer to do my hair than the rest of the stylists( who occasionally do my hair) It is bothersome but not a deal breaker.

I'll set the stage by telling you that 90% of the time she is late.... ten minutes to 1/2 hour. I have only been late 3/4 times in all those years. I have mentioned her lateness casually at few times.

In Novemember, I was 15 minutes late.She had a "puss" (my mom's saying) on her face. I said "I told my husband that if I were late, you would be on time" She said "Well the reason I'm late all the time is because of customers like you who show up late" I said "Sorry, but I am hardly ever late" I was angry although I tried not to show it.

Surfice to say, this has been building up. I really no longer enjoy going to the hairdresser probably because my hair and I have been at it for so long. Also the older I get I am sure I my more impatient

do I break up with her or am I just being a*****?

It is scary for me to try a new stylist

Look I understand how scary it is to find a new stylist. I think we've all had bad experiences with terrible haircuts and it takes forever to grow out. However it sounds like it's time to look for someone new....someone who will give you a great cut and respect you as a customer. Do your research before jumping in.

I did it myself last year and I couldn't be happier with my stylist!

it's like a doctor's office--unless you have the first appointment of the day, you can expect to wait. And she is probably right, it is because some of her clients are late so she runs late. Her comment was bordering on rude though and if her lateness is increasingly bothering you, change hairdressers. But you will probably run into the same thing. I certainly understand your reticence to change though--I've been with mine about the same length of time! I usually get the first appointment on Saturdays. Although it was rare she ran late when I had to go after work.

It sounds like the two of you have had a good run, but it's time for a change, you may have to try a few before you find a good fit. JMO, that's better than being unhappy .

Growing up, my mother always taught me to be a "nice" girl, and to never hurt anyone's feelings. At times that caused me to put up with bad behavior in others much longer than I should have. If I were you I would get a new stylist and not feel guilty about it.

Every time I have changed hair stylists, it has been a positive outcome. It's very scary trying someone new, but don't let that stop you. Move on...I think you'll be pleasantly surpised by the outcome! Best of luck to you!

Well, she is right although she was frustrated when she said it. If her first appointment is late it throws off the whole day. I think you might find the same situation if you change stylists. Depends on how they handle it. I've found the best hairdresser that I've been to in a long time. She is almost always late. One reason is that she drives 45 minutes from her house to the salon. If the weather is bad she is late. If her kids are upset she is late. If her customers are late she is late. Some customers hair takes longer than others. Sometimes she chats too much and doesn't pay attention to the clock. She actually books my appointments longer because I have more hair to deal with than others. But I keep going to her because she's the best. Just depends on how much you want to put up with.

I was going to one stylists who was always late no matter what. I remember one time telling her I wanted the first appt on a Saturday morning to I could get out early. I show up and she already has a color job sitting in the chair. I had to wait for her to finish. That appointment that should have been 90 min turned out to be 4 hours. Another time I had an appt for after work. She was late again. I waited almost 30 min. Then a guy friend of hers came through the door and just went and sat down in the chair and she cut his hair without any explanation. I never went back to her.

On the other hand, I went to a stylist who was always prompt. She got very annoyed with late comers. She had her own salon in her home and I went to her for 10 years. The drive from my house to her was about 40 min. For one appt I left my house in plenty of time, almost an hour before appt time. Wouldn't you know there was a massive traffic jam on the freeway. Sat there without moving for 20 min. When I finally got to her house I was 10 min late. She'd locked the door and wouldn't let me in. I had tried to call her but she didn't answer the phone. So I turned around and got back on the freeway and drove another hour back home. Guess she showed me. Didn't go back there either.

Personally I think that dealing with hairdressers is just as frustrating as dealing with maintenance guys.

I agree with the other Ladies, maybe it is time to move on. Try someone new. And if you can't find someone you like, go back to her. Maybe taking a break will help, too.

Dear LP,

I'm 63 and I would throw in the towel with her. Maybe it's because I'm older but you are paying her so she should be on time and provide the best service she can.

Her "excuse" was not acceptable.

I was raised on this too .. Mother and Gr. Mother ... I am 70 years old and

still trying to get out of this mind set ....putting others first .. the only saving

grace is I noitce my grandaughter is not like this .. hopefully it will save her

a lot of trouble in her life ....

If you like the way that she does your hair, then it is time for each of you to have your say and go on as normal. Sometimes she is late and sometimes you are late. You just need to reach the point where no one takes it too seriously and no harsh words are exchanged.

If you cannot do that on your next visit, then it is time for a change. If you like how the other stylists have done your hair, then just switch to one of them, even though it might be somewhat uncomfortable.

Or, start looking for a new stylist. If you are on Nextdoor, just put out a recommendation request. You will get plenty of them.

Keep in mind, though, that everyone runs late at sometime or another. Also, sometimes the older we get, the harder it is to get moving in the morning. Your stylist takes longer now to do your hair, so it takes longer for her to do other things--maybe just like all of us as we age. Sometimes we have to put everything aside and show compassion, even when we don't want to do so and even when it is inconvenient for us. Only you know what you are willing to tolerate and that is okay, too.

Last fall I left the stylist that's been doing my hair since the early 80's she's sweet, thoughtful & a great stylist but I felt I was in a rut & it was time for something new. I went online & found great reviews about a stylist in a nearby salon, made an appointment for a trim & we talked about what she would do differently with my hair. I went home thought about it & so happy with my decision, she gave me a new cut, dimensional color & it's lifted my spirits. I don't look at changing stylist as a breakup at all, just a needed change done FOR ME. Consider a change for yourself too. Good luck.

Years ago I quit going to a hairdresser that took vacations ALL THE TIME. I have no idea how she kept clients, but I finally had enough and looked for a new stylist......been with the same person ever since.... I'd look for someone else.

If you're not wanting to change hairdressers, why not have a chat with her. Surely you've developed some comraderie between the two of you. Maybe you both just need to have a little "heart-to-heart" and possibly get past this.......if you want to stay with her.

Saying that you no longer enjoy going to this stylist is your very reason to find someone else. I feel it is very important to go to a stylist we like, and enjoy the experience enough to want to pay for their services.

The stylist I have now went to school with my daughters, is a stay at home mom, and comes to my house. My previous stylist had a head full of wild ideas that resulted in her moving her shop 5x in the 15+ years I paid for her services. The last time she moved the shop was the sign I needed to find someone new. Even though I loved what she did with my hair, I just couldn’t make that drive to her new shop, and told her so.

I think it’s time for you to find a new stylist.

You've been late, too-- "three to four times" in a year. Clean up your act first, promise to her that you will be on time, and see how things go, Criticizing her when you are doing the same thing seems childish and petty to me,

The OP was late 3 - 4 times in 12 or 13 years.

The stylist is late 90% of the time (according to the OP). That's how I read it anyways.

That is entirely different in my book.

Personally I think for a customer to be late 3 or 4 times is rude.

If she does a good job on your hair and is reasonably priced I would stay with her. I don't need my hairdresser to be my "friend".
