I got hacked

Someone got into my back account, tried to get a duplicate of my cc and attempted into my email.

I won't lose any money but not fun. I've spent much of my vacation listening to recorded music on my phone.

I ask every person I to speak to regarding this " how did this happen?"

My doctors and hospitals have my Medicare card which has my ss no." Hacker had SS no.

I've been paying five dollars a month to Discover for ID Theft. It's coming in handy and saving me time spent on the phone.

I'd appreciate any feedback. I think this is the first time I posted here. I hope it's the right place.

DH & I were hacked 2 years ago.Someone stole our ss#’s & filed a Federal Income Tax return to try & collect a refund in our names.Luckily,the IRS flagged it before it went through.We were notified & had to spend countless hours notifying agencies & banks etc.

We put 90 day alerts in place but have since froze our credit with the 3 credit bureaus.We now have piece of mind.

@lavendar The best thing you can do to protect yourself is to freeze your credit.The freeze stays in affect for 7 years & is renewable.You can always lift the freeze for a day if you apply for credit & then lock it down again.

@lavendar, this happened to my husband and I several years ago. I noticed while I was checking my account online, that there was a Lowe's EPay charge on our savings account. We have never paid any bills thru the savings account and don't have a lowes card. Went to lowes. Of course they knew nothing about it and the acct number was invalid.

The first woman I talked to at the bank insisted it was just a mistake and someone had probably had to enter in an account number by hand and made an error. Even though I explained repeatedly that we are NOT set up to have any withdrawls from savings.

Next month, the exact same amount but doubled was deducted from out savings, another Lowe's Epay that didn't exist.

We went to main office, changed our account number. The lady helping us then looked up that invalid Lowe's number and it was a routing number to wal mart. She said no matter how much they spent on cyber security, these hackers were just as smart as the security people and always looking for ways to hack in and steal money.

I would have liked to have known how this happened too.

One interesting thing, was that when these two charges happened, we probably had more money in our savings account than we ever had. We had been saving for something and then had an insurance payment for a new roof and other house repairs from a large storm that had gone through and the roofer hadn't been able to get to us yet.

The timing so odd, I have always wondered if whoever the hackers were had some way of knowing how much we had in there.

Funny that you should mention Lowe's.

Just the other day, someone tried to use my Wells Fargo debit card # to make a purchase at a Lowe's.

It was flagged and declined.

It happened to me a few years ago, someone got a hold of my debit acct and was charging things down in the Carolinas...haven’t been there in years...I believe it was hacked through a gas station...never use your debit at a gas station....it was a hassle, but bank refunded me...I didn’t use my debit for a long time, and recently decided to start using it again...this time, I keep a small amount in that account..I transfer into that acct only as needed...our ‘big’ money is kept in a different bank that is not online..old school savings acct, no online access. I have noticed that I’m still getting paper statements thru the mail for our online bank accts...so I’m changing that today, as they are putting our full acct number on these statements, and half the time I get my neighbors mail so I’m sure they get ours too...seriously, why do banks still mail out statements with your full acct number on them? Seems ridiculous in this day and age with all the hacking.

@Karie2022 I don't use a debit/CC at the gas station, because of this. Cash only. It happened to me, so I know.

Our banks use only the last few digits for accts and CD statements. If your present bank can't, suggest you try another that does the few digits thing.

So true. Our banks don't use the full account numbers either, not on any of our accounts. Our CC statements and correspondence don't have full account numbers either. Just the 4 last digits. Perhaps some very small older banks aren't doing what they need to do to protect people. I also can't figure out how someone can get into your bank statment and find your email address.

I don't think they ever got my email address. They did try and get in to my email by creating new email addresses. Some were similar to mine, some weren't. Comcast email and Comcast caught on quickly and froze my email. I think they might have had access because that would be how they would find my cc.

I always use cash at the gas station.

My identity theft is in effect because it froze a cc I rarely use. I was issued a new card. I don't know what you mean by freezing my cc. I have two new cc cards, a new debit card. I have to check my insurance to see if they actually try to alert me.

How horrible O/P and for everyone who has gone though this. You would think with all the technology out there that the geeks in the computer world would figure out a way to avoid all this. As much as I love my devices when I read threads about this I think we are better off with out these devices. JMO
