A very nice gesture

I was out running some errands this afternoon and stopped by the Sonic to get my usual happy hour Diet Dr. Pepper. No biggie - it’s only $1.30, not what I’m getting at. But when I made it to the window to pay, the girl that works there wouldn’t take my money and told me that the car in front of me had paid for my drink.

What a wonderful gesture! I had never encountered such an act of kindness and it touched me so much that I wanted to pay it forward. So I decided to do the same for the car behind me. So I told the girl at the drive up window that I wanted to do the same for the car behind me. She looked at me and said “are you sure?”

I was so overwhelmed and in the spirit that I said absolutely. Well, it was $8.25, lol!

I am not complaining at all. To me it was just a reminder of how even the smallest act of kindness can really make a persons day!

That is wonderful and yes you are right it isn't about the money is about being kind to someone for no reason other than doing something nice and paying it forward because it has been done for you. The world would be a much nicer place if we all treated each other with kindness just because it is the right thing to do.

It doesn’t really matter if the people behind me appreciated it or not. Who knows? It made me feel great. I haven’t really had much to smile above in a very long time and I’ve been smiling ever since. A reminder that I can always be a better person than I am. I’ve always tried to be a kind person but sometimes a reminder can be a good thing. With all the horrors and sadness going on these days it kind of restores my faith in humanity.

I grew up in NYC and there were lots of toll roads and bridges back then. My dad, though he never had a lot of money, would always pay the toll for the car behind him. This was long before it was trendy to 'pay it forward'. He was just a good-hearted man and it made him happy to do that.

Good for you, OP. When we decide to bestow kindness on someone, we have no control over how it's received. The joy is in the giivng.

I always give the kids at the window and the car hops a nice tip and I go to Sonic a LOT! They always seem like nice kids and I admire them for working hard. Happy hour is 2-4, large drinks half price! LOL!!!

The same thing happened to me at Starbucks...I stopped there on my way back to the hospital & when I was handed my coffee I was told that the car in front of me had paid my bill. What, Why? I was so flustered that I didn't think to pay for the car behind me, just said can't believe it Thank You & drove away. The man who did that kind gesture had no idea my husband had drowned a month before & that I was headed to the hospital because a young family member was near death from an infection...thinking about his kindness helped me through a difficult time so now I play it forward several times each year, it brings me peace.

What a kind gesture on your part!! I have no doubt that the reciepient of your kindness felt special for the rest of the day.

Having the chance to do something really nice for someone at the spur of the moment is a true testament to your inner kindness. There was no hesitation on your part, just the opportunity to repay a kindness.

I'm sure your day ended up being a good one. For me, doing something for someone just because I can, or I am in the right place at the right time makes me happy for the rest of the day.

This is such a kind and thoughtful discussion. It would be nice if we could do something nice each day. The other day I went to the humane society and this woman had all these bags of dog food to donate. I offered to help her carry the bags and another couple offered. It was nice to help another person. She had a toddler who carried a smaller bag. Kindness can never be underestimated.

@ID2 I don't think of it as tooting the generosity horn but instead a reminder to spread kindness and gift a happy smile to someone's day.When I read theses stories it inspires me to make someone's day a little brighter when the opportunity presents itself.

”Tooting my own horn” as ID2 so eloquently put it was absolutely the furthest thing from my mind and didn’t even register in my brain when I made my post.

Quite the opposite. The reason I posted about what happened was because I was truly touched and moved by the unexpected kindness that a stranger had bestowed upon me. It may not seem like a big thing to you, but it touched me deeply. It gave me a lift and a smile for the rest of the day.

I am sorry that ID2 looked at it from a cynical viewpoint. That makes me sad. But I can’t control what other people think. It probably says more about them than it does about me.

But hey - it’s Friday and I hope everyone has a great day!
