When new employees sign up for auto-deposit, can you use a voided copy of a check from their bank or does it have to be an original check?

The HR Department need the routing and transit # and your account #. It did not matter if it was a copy or the original. As long as they could read the #s.

I have always been instructed to void the check before giving it to them.

I see no reason to buy checks when I can use the same VOIDED check I've used for two other jobs.

Exactly! And, I've already done that for them. My employer needs to get out of the dark ages!

You can also just use a deposit slip. They don't need a check. Just the routing and account numbers to set it up with your bank.

They ask for a voided check because a lot of people have illegible hand writing and it saves them from the reject and redo.

Where I work we accept a copy of the check, or an original check with void written across the front, I usually ask for a copy so that the employee does not waste a check because we only need the bank routing# and the account number to set up the direct deposit.

Ok, guess I didn’t think of that. I thought everyone had at least a couple of blank checks, even if we never use them.

ETA - I never saved/made a copy of a voided check. I just shredded it.

My son has an account with Chase but does not have any checks. Chase printed a copy of a check with his account and routing numbers and VOID was boldly printed on the copy and the company accepted that.

I called the HR dept.

Apparently my supervisor doesn't know what's acceptable. (Annoying!)

The copy I sent A MONTH AGO was fine!

When I was working HR and collecting this info, we had the new employees fill out a form with the info on it. They could attach a deposit slip to the form if they wanted.

I would be concerned about the safety of that info if I were you. You don't want that info laying around where anyone can see it. We kept that info in a locked file cabinet until the first check was paid, then the paper was shredded.

On my checking account, the numbers on the checks and the deposit slips are different.

Check yours.

You can use a copy of a check, with VOID written on it. Like others said, they need the bank routing number ( the first set of digits on the bottom of the check) and your account number ( the second set of numberson your check).

Look at your deposit slips.

I was surprised by this when I went to reorder checks.!

@Othereeeen Good catch! That makes zero sense. If the numbers don't match, they are not depositing into your checking account. I wonder if that was the order fulfillment person's personal account. That's a clever way to steal from people.

Nope..it's on MY deposit slips. I just looked again. The routing number on thechecks ( the first digits on the bottom) are different than the same set of numbers on the deposit slips.

I think the BANK does this for security reasons. That way if someone finds discarded deposit slips they won't have your real account number. Most people don't use up all thier slips before the checkbook runs out.

Those first digits are the bank's routing number, so even if they are different, they must be made to be interpretable by your bank.!!!

Where I used to work we never had to provide a voided check or anything. We just filled out the paper and wrote our routing number and account number down.

The reason we want the check or deposit slip is simply because people do not write clearly and don't write the numbers correctly or all of the numbes.

It just saves time and aggravation to get the number correctly up front.
