Infection may postpone surgery

I’ve written about my upcoming knee replacement surgery. Well, it may not be quite as upcoming as I had thought. I have a sinus infection and bloodwork indicated I do have an infection. No surgery unless and until it’s cleared up.

I've had a joint replaced, and man, I sweated those pre-op tests. I needed the surgery and could not bear the thought of postponement. Fortunately, it all went well. I hope the same for you!

In the process of my evaluation we found a heart defect. Lovely! More tests.

I had my pre op visit yesterday for my knee replacement and all is good. Mine is October 23. I actually ran into a friend I worked with several years ago in the waiting room and he had his 7 weeks ago and he gave me some useful information. Hope you get well soon and you can get surgery.

Oh, it is disappointing to have something that is weighing on you like a surgery, get postponed. I know you want to get through to the other side and be on the healing and mending side of it all.

I do believe things happen for a reason, most often reasons we never do know. Perhaps this is so in this case, and we will have to take it on faith that the timeline may change and for reasons that are important, if not just to you, perhaps to others involved. I always pray for the medical professionals that they are given all the insight, wisdom and tools at their disposal to give the best care and decision making in regards to our tests, treatments, surgeries, and diagnoses.

Sometimes the surgery or treatment becomes all about us, in our need and anxiety, when in fact, it is important for all the players involved to be at maximum level of ability and performance.

So, perhaps if this is delayed, it will all be for very good reasons, and because when it does come to play out, it is doing so in just the right alignment to be the most successful.

Prayers for your waiting, concern, stress, procedure and healing. We will be here if you need company throughout!

Best wishes on your upcoming surgery. You and @Vivian have my admiration for moving ahead with this. I need to do it, but keep putting it off, for a variety of reasons.

@Vivian I had a knee replacement last November and the pre-op tests were very in depth. My surgeon explained that any little infection could possibly attach itself to the plastic portion of the replacement parts and cause all kinds of problems.

You will even even have to take an antibiotic to have your teeth cleaned. I was shocked when they told me that, but I even had to have a thorough dental check up prior to surgery.

@Grandmapètes There has been new info released on the necessity of taking antibiotics before a dental procedure and now they say it's not necessary. I discussed it with my dentist and he said he'd make it optional. I prefer not taking antibiotics unless it's absolutely necessary.

I have three joint replacements and my ortho surgeon is adamant that I continue to take antibiotics before any invasive procedure, including any dental work.

Last thing you would need is an infection, @Vivian, and I hope you are cleared for surgery quickly. 🤞🏻

Many would be glad their heart defect was found before having a cardiac event. There are many, including myself, that had no symptoms other than my heart attacks.

Once the heart muscle is damaged(tissue lost), it is gone forever. Less muscle tissue equals harder work for the heart. I personally see you as fortunate, the 1st symptom for many is death.

Tests? I wouldn't even venture a guess as to how many I have had, but it is well into the 3 digits. Tests I have had are for a reason and my only interest is the result and what needs to be done to fix or control it. Sweating results accomplishes nothing but negatives.

Glad your surgery went well for you.

That must be so disappointed. You get yourself emotionl prepared and your support system at home waiting to go and then the surgery is postponed. But that's a good thing, they won't do an elective surgery while you have any type of infection.

yes, they clear up infections we have before anything is done. The mouth is super duper one to be careful of.

And my mother had a series of mini strokes today. Both of my daughters and my brother are with her. I cannot visit her if I’m sick but if things go from bad to worse, I will drive the 5 hours to get there. When it rains, it pours.

A very close friend just finished a knee re- replacement. An infection attacked the knee joint that was replaced. She had to live with an IV antibiotic at home in bed for many weeks. She also had to have gum surgery to prevent any infection from entering via that route ( they believe that that was the entry point of her infection ).

She finally had the re-replacement and is in recovery and then rehab.

Please make sure that you follow the doctor's advice where prior infection / surgical procedures are concerned.

You wouldn't think we'd be so anxious to have surgery again, would you? I had a TKN on an already infected knee 10 years ago.

Was scheduled to have it replaced in June, but had a run in with a new autoimmune disease which cancelled the replacement. Was scheduled for review with Ortho on MONDAY and got a call 2 days ago that he's going to be out of town and I'm back on the waiting list. I've already been cleared by Cardo, Another Ortho, Rheumatology, and Immunology, but now I'm on wait list again for surgery review.

Perhaps I would no be SO ANNOYED if I hadn't fallen and broken the prosthesis as a result of the new disease and have been hopping around on an essentially broken leg for 1/2 a year.

It was all I could do NOT to throw my phone into the wall when I picked up the message! I know MDs need breaks, but he can have NO idea of all the things that were arranged around THAT date. Just NO IDEA!

I hope your new joint happens quickly. I hate the thought of a re-replacement. What you are going through must be very difficult.

My mother is home from the hospital. She is one strong 95 year old, I have a check-up at the hospital tomorrow but I am still coughing and asthmatic. I am prepared to postpone the knee replacement surgery. I’ll aim for the last week in November so that THanksgiving isn’t ruined and I can enjoy my grandson’s (and girlfriend’s) Christmas visit. Living in upstate New York, I don’t want to have this surgery in winter.

@Vivian, glad to heR your mom is home again. Feel better soon! I know what you mean about being incapacitated in winter. Lady year I got the cast off my foot in mid December before the snow hit. I was very thankful.
