Surgery postponed

My husband's shoulder surgery is postponed til the 14th. He drank a cup of coffee with cream at 4am and we were to be at hospital at 5:30. He thought it would be ok. Well,no. He was all gowned up, etc. They told us no luquids but apparently we aren't too sharp at 4am.

Just wanted to thank you all for kind words.Keep them for us til the 14th. 💞

How disappointing. You'll be prepared next time. My mother had to recently fast for blood work. I was talking with her before she left. She mentioned she was drinking coffee. She was shocked when I told her she couldn't drink it.

That must be terribly disappointing but don't feel bad, you'd be surprised at how often surgical patients blank out and do that. The 14th isn't far off and you'll have funny story to tell once he has had that surgery.

Doesn't anybody listein to instructions ?? This is standard operating

procedure for any sugery ....When they say no eating or drinking why

do people think it is a joke ....no sympathy ....hope they charge you

something for the wasted time of staff and hospital ....

It's very important to follow instructions exactly. Years ago, my daughter was having hand surgery and we went to the pediatric surgical center. While in the waiting room, a woman with a baby was called in. As they walked past us, the nurse asked if the baby had nothing to eat or drink past midnight. The mother said, "Nothing but a little apple juice this morning." They were sent home immediately.

A friend of mine did something really absurd. She went for a colonoscopy. Most people know about the awful prep. My friend followed the instructions, but when she was done she took Imodium. When she told the doctor, she got he££ from him. Her answer, as she told the story to me was, "Nobody told me I couldn't take it." I was speechless.

Many anesthetists have relaxed the no liquids after midnight for elective surgery and instead allow liquids up to two hours before.

This rule was initiated in the 60's because the anesthesia used back then caused vomiting. If this got into the lungs, often the patient got pneumonia. With today's better anesthesia this is a rare occurrence.

Many surgeries are preformed with a full stomach with no adverse affects, especially after an accident.

Soon, the midnight rule will be only used very rarely. There is really no need to go without liquids that long for most people.

As @Carmie said, the reason doctors don't want people to anything in their stomachs, is because they don't want the patient to possibly vomit, and asperate the vomit in to the lungs, and get pneumonia.

When my dad had his surgeries, the doctors told him that he could take his daily meds, with the tiniest sip of water.

I always call and ask (ahead of time) if I remember.

Sometimes a yes (i.e.: coffee before Colonoscopy and clear liquids?) and before blood tests ... they can say if the item is a yes or a no.

People don't intend to ignore the pre op orders, it's just a matter of forgettin momentarily. That's why when you in for your surgery, 3 different people ask you multiple times if you have had anything to eat or drink. I'm in heallthcare, I know this stuff and it happened to me twice. Once was major abdominal surgery and I totally didn't eat anything after 8pm per the instructions and nothing the next morning and it was 5am when we were driving into the city and I was starving and for some odd reason, my mind blanked and I had a pack of peanut butter crackers in my bag and....well, you know how this ends. No cell phones in those days, we didn't have one anyway. So, drove into the hospital and my husband who is an RN explained what happened and they postoned the surgery. A few years later, I was going to have my colonocopy and I followed those intructions to the letter and then I was watching tv late at night and I made a bag of microwave popcorn....and you know how that went. It might even be nerves that makes us forget but like I said, I work in healthcare and it happens. I've seen it medical records. The important think is that patients should be honest when they mess up and not try to hide it. Surgery or a procedure can always be postponed.

Often what appear as misspellings are just typos caused by some of us imperfect people hitting the wrong key. In fact Big Joanie was right to point out that the time was wasted because the patient didn't follow instructions.

It was postponed for a good reason. I think you were not supposed to have the procedure done until the 14th, for some good reason. It may be a blessing in disguise.

Whenever my DH is scheduled for blood work or any type of procedure where he cannot eat after midnight, I tape a sheet of paper on the fridge saying NO water, No coffee, No food, Nothing. This always stops him because he does tend to forget. A few times when he did forget and was going to get some coffee or juice he was so happy I taped that note up.

My husband had IV sedation and a spinal for two surgeries and he was allowed clear liquid's up until 3 hours pre surgery
