Bugzilla in the Bathtub

Last night when making my last trip to the bathroom before going to bed, I noticed what looked like a mutant cricket sitting on the pump of my Wen Sweet Almond Mint. I took a closer look, and it appeared to be a HUGE beetle or cockroach. Bugs don't bother me, but this monster freaked me out! I've never seen a bug like this before in my geographic area let alone my own bathroom.

I got the bottle and headed for the toilet as it is crawling down the bottle toward my hand, and flicked it in before it got close enough for me to really FREAK. Flushed, waited about ten seconds...did I mention it had 2-inch feelers?...and saw two feelers peaking out from the depths of the toilet.

Well, I couldn't flush again, since the tank was refilling, so we battled it out, me with a cardboard toilet paper roll from the trash, and he was climbing in and out of it as I was trying to keep him away from my hand. Finally was able to flush again and again, and again. Oh, and again, for good measure.

I had the idea of covering the toilet bowl with cling wrap overnight just to be safe, but thought that might backfire if I made a sleepy trip to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

I felt bad for flushing him/her, but I was in survival mode! And this thing was probably about 4 inches long, from tip of feelers to hind end. I did feel bad about all the water I wasted with the excessive flushing, but it had to be done for me to sleep peacefully.

I'm glad you're ok.....

There's a reason these bugs have survived for a million years. It was probably just a summer water park ride for him.... don't worry, he's probably found a way out by now and thankful he's out of your bathroom.

Sounds like what Southerners lovingly call a palmetto bug, a huge roach thing that will fly up into your face. One good thing, just a tiny bit of insecticide will kill them..... toilets, probably not. They thrive around water.

@Kachina624 Good advice about the insecticide...except I wasn't letting this big bugger out of my sight!

When I first moved to the south I went to the bathroom in the middle of the night, with no light, and grabbed the toilet paper. To my horror there was a cockroach on top of the roll. Yes, I yelled and woke my husband up. I'm used to them now and we don't seem to have as many now in our house.

I think I'd put some PineSol or bleach in the toilet bowl with it!

I've found for a quick bug stopper that spraying Windex directly on them at least slows them down long enough for me to grab a tissue or papertowel to capture & dispose.

Heavy duty hair spray will usually stop bugs in their tracks. The stronger the better. It dries so fast they can't run far. I also like that you don't need to get too close. I always keep one handy.

Um yea That would be me...house on fire to get rid of it or them...actually just kidding too.

We took a trip to South Carolina many years ago. The place we stayed in had those giant cockroaches running around like they owned the place. I was in absolute panic mode. When I called the realty place that arranged the rental, she said "oh they are just palmetto bugs, they are native to this area." I told her lady, you can call it by its cute name but those things are m*****f*#**#*# cockroaches and we want out of here. Fortunately, they arranged a very large suite at a local hotel for our stay as the cockroach place was a single home.

Skeered of anything crawling. Got bug man coming quarterly to spray and put down stuff all around the perimeter of the house and the garage. Not inside, but I gotta say, I never see a live bug anywhere outside. They are all belly up😉

I would have had a stroke if I saw one of those things in my bathroom. Fortunately we live too far north for them to survive the winters.

Oh your kind!!!! I can't stand these palmetto aka roaches. I keep a can of roach killer in every room within arms length. I'm freaked out by them, plus they hide in walls & when the lights flick on yikes they go scampering!!!

My washer & dryer is in my garage🙄So I go out there "on patrol" the thought of seeing one really drives me insane! It's been humid, hot & rainy for 5 days so I have my "cockroach eyes" on alert!!!!

the bugs here are horrible😲 One day I saw one climbing up the wall and I screamed "he's bigger than a SW jet liner!" I think I sprayed him 15 times and that s-o-b was still alive an hour later....

another thing I hate about FL bugs!!!!😤😤😤😤

That's a bad sign you have a cockroach problem in your home. Better call a pest exterminator control company ASAP. When you see cockroaches, that means there's more in hiding and multiplying like crazy.

Have you checked under the bathroom sink, cabinets, and under your bed?

In this house, any trespasser such as bugs, spiders, and snakes, must die. I have no tolerance.

@RedTopNo, he hasn't returned and I haven't encountered any of his friends or family! But I am still vigilant when entering the bathroom.

If it had been a snake, I would have left my house that night. A snake in my house is my worst nightmare!

@EatWell So far, he is the only one. I checked the house and apparently he was a lone wolf!
