COIN in the freezer...helpful tip...

A friend emailed this tip, and I thought I'd pass it on (y'all have probably heard of it...I'm always the last to know lol)...

If you've ever returned home to flashing clocks, you know the power went out...but for how long? Did the food in your freezer thaw partially or completely or not at all? Here's a way to know for sure...

Fill a small plastic container (or any type of container) with water and put in freezer. Once it freezes, place a coin on top and put it back in freezer. If you suspect your power went out, check the coin...if it's in the middle of the container, partial thawing occurred. If it's at the bottom...well, you might want to consider tossing everything in your freezer.

Why didn't I think of that??!?

Excellent idea! I do love the idea of peddling them as designer coins for the freezer. What great holiday gifts they'd make for your manicurist, your hairdresser, your children's teachers, the train conductor and your trash collectors.

And don't forget to buy a few to stow in your gift drawer!!

The tip that I heard to determine if your food is safe to eat after the power has gone out is, take a plastic water bottle, and put a few drops of food coloring in, and freeze it on its side.

After it is frozen, set it upright, and if the power has been out for any legnth of time, the thawed water will have melted.

Easy-peasy, and best of all, it's free!!!!!!

Well, that would certainly tell the tale. But I find that I can just feel the items in the freezer to see if they are partially thawed.

The only tip I remember, from eons ago, was that if the power goes out you should NOT be opening the freezer door or, at least, open is as infrequently and briefly as possible. That way, at least it will maintain as much of the low temp as possible until the electricity, hopefully, comes back on soon.

My reliable method to tell how long the power has been out is my old-fashioned electric desk clock. It stops when the power goes out, and starts up again when it's restored. So if for example that dial reads 3:00 and it's actually 5:00, l know the power was out for 2 hours.

True, except if you've been on vacation for more than one day, then you won't know if power came back at 5:00 on Tue or Wed.

LOL...I hear ya! I was also thinking about @insomniac2 's post...if you leave the house at 7AM and power goes out at 7:01A and you don't get home 'til 10P, you won't know if the power went out at 7:01A or 7:01P. Granted, your food might not have thawed out in that amount of time, but partial thawing may have occurred...I would want to know. It's such an easy, simple thing to do.
