Need to run out for Passover order. Just came into store last night...not great selection or not in great quanties in our part of NC. Stores put out a boat load of cream soda & yarhzeit candles & think that's Passover. Gotta laugh 😂!!

@ShanusShayna hi! You sure are early for Shabbos lol

I understand what you're saying. Some stores have no clue what Passover is, and take out anything they have in stock that has any kind of Hebrew writing on it and assumes they are for Passover.

Last year my local supermarket actually put out not-for-Passover matzoh and matzoh meal on their piddly display. It was really sad, and I had to educate the manager as to what Passover is all about. Turns out they had a larger display in a different part of the store with real Passover matzoh and macaroons and all the good stuff. The manager didn't even know about it until one of his employees told him.

I have a recipe for Passover butter crunch. Here is the recipe if you want to dazzle your family. It's sooooooo good:

4-6 Sheets of unsalted matzah

1 cup unsalted butter (two sticks)

1 cup light brown sugar

1 cup (6 oz) semi sweet chocolate bits

(sprinkle sea salt) (1/2 tsp vanilla)

Preheat oven to 375.

Lightly grease cookie sheet or jelly roll pan. Line bottom of pan entirely with matzah, breaking into smaller pieces if necessary to fill the entire sheet, including corners.

In saucepan, combine butter and sugar, and cook over medium heat until boiling, stirring constantly. Reduce heat and cook, stirring, until begins to boil, about three minutes. Pour sugar/butter mixture evenly over matzah.

Bake for about 15 minutes, checking every four or five minutes to make sure it's not burning. Should be light caramel colored only --BURNS VERY EASILY!!

Remove from oven and sprinkle with chocolate bits. Let stand for 5 minutes, then spread melted bits over entire surface. Chill in refrigerator until set, and break into pieces. ENJOY!!

@Shanus- Maybe if you change the title of this thread to Passover, we can get some more recipes. I'd love to see what others are cooking, as well as their family favorites.

@Shanus- I VERY rarely go over to the recipe board, since I don't cook very much. I don't know how much interest there would be for a Passover candy over there. I think I once posted the recipe on the Community page, which was fine, but if I did that today, it would probably be moved by a moderator over to the recipe board anyway. I would think those who post on our Friday Shabbat Shalom will see it tomorrow.

By the way, why would cream soda be in the Passover section? I don't even get that!!!

@sunala. No one knew what a bagel was when I moved here 65 yrs. ago. So now they associate cream soda w/ delis & I can always find it on the Kosher aisle w/ the yahrzeit candles, & anything they think is remotely related to Kosher. Beats me. Stopped asking questions about it decades ago.

@Shanus that's funny! I notice that grape juice is usually in the Passover section, but don't know why.

I've never lived outside NY so I don't have much experience with places that don't have bagels. I remember when I was a little girl, my family took a car trip up to Rome, NY. My mother asked for a bagel with her eggs for breakfast, and they didn't have a clue. She tried describing it, and they offered her a donut and an English Muffin. Not even close!

I guess I'm spoiled because of where I live. I remember growing up with all those wonderful appetizing stores in Brooklyn, with whitefish, lox, pickled herring, shmaltz herring, pickled salmon, sturgeon and sable. Sadly, I don't see that food anymore unless I'm at a Jewish wedding, or paying a shiva call.

@sunala. Maybe the younger generation doesn't like those foods.... not the healthiest. My Nana used to spread shmaltz (rendered chicken fat for anyone else tuning in) on my matzo...Oooh! So good.

I have told this story here before, but will again.

Years ago I was on a cruise and at the midnight buffet they had a huge ham with bagels around it.

Lots of people are not aware of the customs of others.

It would be such fun if everyone shared and learned.

Love reading these posts. I sooo miss the soul foods! Born in NYC, and grew up near there, where many Jewish delis. Now transplanted to rural CT,and there's none. Miss the whitefish, blitzes, kugel, lox (market packages ok, but not same)! Oh well, still grateful for a good life! 🙏❤️ Shabbat shalom Sunala and friends!

Our family is 3 generations of Tar Heel (UNC to those who don't know) graduates....including parents, cousins, nieces, nephews, grandchildren....Oh, one renegade niece, after UNC under grad went to Duke law school & graduated w/ honors. We do still talk to her & include her in family gatherings, anyway. 😁

@Skyegirl21. "Stuck" in NC (food wise) for 65 yrs., we've also been deprived the good foods we knew as children. Relatives came from NY & FL w/ coolers brimming over with goodies that we enjoyed.

Since married, I've placed ordered w/ Zabar's...(one in Georgetown is closest to me) for deli stuff and cakes, ruggies for Onegs.

Definitely not Kosher (nearly impossible down here unless everything shipped in), but it's Jewish "style" foods I crave.

If anyone is close or within reach to Baltimore, we have the largest Kosher mkt here on the East Coast, even the New Yorkers come here on busses to get there, called 7 Mile Market in Pikesville. Many come here for their Passover orders. Check it out.
