Years ago after high school, I dated a FBI guy (disaster) and thought, wow, I sure would like to work for some kind of agency and have a job as a profiler.

Been thinking about that lately and just for fun, I look at various posts and think, WoW, this person must be about this many years old, have a great job, not work etc.

Well, tonight was the night that I thought I had this nic all figured out (just to test my skills (if I had any) and realized I was all wrong.

Glad I didn't persue that career, that would of been really short.

Goes to show that never assume. On a side note, I never went to school for this but thought my instincts would outweigh the training, guess not.

Do you have people figured out?

Someone posted that's been quite active and I thought they were in their 20's and because they posted some personal information, they are well in their 60's maybe older. It doesn't matter it was just I remembered the career path I was going to take.

maybe i'm missing something but isn't your nic your nickname?

I'm not profiler material, but I've always been good at figuring people out, especially in that so many often don't have a clue. Body language, facial expressions, word usage. Someone trying "cleverly" to "fool" you when they're only clever in their own mind and I can see them coming a mile away. It's not even something I "try" to do, it's just a part of me. I've always been able to do it since I can remember.

Profiling, though, goes into the Psychology of Why, and I've never gotten into that (don't really care).

"Do I have people figured out"? That is a rather vague question subject to many different characteristics and traits of different people.

Through my trip through life being involved in organizations, and being the top dog, of more than I wished, I have met thousands of people from around our country, and the world. Having to deal with many of them directly, I have learned a bit more as I have the more experience that comes along with getting older.

If I spend enough time around certain people, I have been fairly good at assessing if they are someone I want to know, beyond our similar interests in certain things. Some I refer to as associates, others as a friend. Many, many fewer as good friends.

My main goal when I started my Adult Hockey League when I was not yet 23 years old, was to find players that were compatible with the type of hockey I wanted to see played. That was still my objective at age 75, which was 52 years after I started and ran this league, by myself.

I found many great men that were really nice guys, but? Put on their hockey gear and start the game, not the same person? Sports do that to many, mostly to those that were/are too competitive for the listed goal of my hockey league.

Fortunately those types were a small majority of those I chose. Yes chose, as I had waiting lists almost every year during those many decades. The ones that couldn't or wouldn't fit in? Break the(my) rules and you are gone, good friend or new associate. Everyone was treated exactly the same. Opps? Did I happen to answer your question in this overly long diatribe? I hope so.

Some people are just more intuitive or discerning....they seem to have a gift for it. I know they used to give tests for such things years ago. I don't know if they still do. Even so, mistakes can be easily made when trying to "size a person up" (as they used to say). One must trod carefully.

I can generally tell a great deal about a person when I hear them speak.....not only what they say, but how they say things and their use of language and speech patterns.

As a college prof/instructor, you have to figure out the students in order to find those things that best reaches them.

But there is always room for plenty of surprises!

I know I've tried to figure out what a person may look like when I heard them talk on the radio. Talk about surprises!

No, I don't have people figured out at all. And once I get feeling like I do have someone figured out, they surprise me. Sometimes good, sometimes bad.

I have an old friend who recently friended me on facebook. I unfriended her last night. I never would have thought she was so judgemental, small minded and NOT NICE. She didn't use to be like that.

People on this board assume a lot about other posters then , in their mind they assume it is all fact, when the actual fact is - they made it all up.

I do think that the process of assessing other people, and getting a sense of their characters, takes time.

Observe. What are their values? What do they take seriously, and what do they take lightly?

As far as you can determine, are they honest? How do they treat others. Are they kind?

What do they think about, and what do they talk about-- this can be very revealing. Do they generally display warmth, loyalty, dignity, or whatever the values are that are important to you?

Geting to see how they handle themselves in a variety of situations can be very helpful. And it does take time.

@Mistreatedbycs, on here? No it's my "handle." My nickname are terms of endearment that my loved ones have given me for some odd reason or another. I may have given myself a nickname as well. On Social media (such as a forum) it's my handle. No one outside of this place (knows my name or my nicknames) and that's the way it should be.

As far as knowing how to profile someone, no I can't say that I can. That requires a lot of cultural anthropology, group psychology, study of sociopaths and such plus a host of other courses. It's not an exact science either so. I do find it interesting because I'm a true crime buff and watch this kind of programming consistently.

This could take a lifetime to do. People change throughout their lives. Finally, when faced with a situation one has never encountered before it is extremely different to know that what they do today, would be what they would do if it ever happened again.

To me, the above would only tell of the person's "qualifications" as far as someone to associate with. When I'm viewing someone's behavior, I'm not necessarily thinking 'do I like them', I'm just experiencing who/what they are, usually apart from 'are they acceptable to me.'

I think it all boils down to the fact that, whether we like to admit it or not, we are constantly judging others, consciously or subconsciously. It's not a bad thing, it's human nature.

I think you have to know someone for a long time before you can make a personal judgement about them. I think there are first impressions, but that's all they are. I thought profiling was where you gathered info on someone and tried to figure out what they would do and how they may behave from that info.

I have taken Karate since College. Then intensely for years becoming a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Tang Soo Do.

I also taught and I participated in Tournaments. One of the things we learned was to recognize certain facial characteristics, body movements, because there are characteristics that turn out to be the same. If it's called profiling, then that is what it is.... people intent to cause harm tend to give off a certain vibe and if you've been taught what to look for, what you might feel from them (first instinct is usually right).... you may be able to diffuse a situation, or at least run.

But the person studying this whether in Karate or in general does need to have a higher than normal curiosity about it and a certain amount of natural perception.... IMHO
