WARNING TO ALL ON FACEBOOK

I have a son in the military. He is as high up as you can go. They had a security meeting ,and they were told that once you have a facebook account , all your information is out there. It don't matter what you put your settings at. It is still accessable. Please be careful what you post on there. Pictures of children and their names, not good. Leave your birthdate and any personal information off of it. They will try to convince you that they need your phone number to keep your account safe. It is bologna! Don't put where you work or where you went to school. In other words the less information the better. Make up a birthdate. I personally am getting off after heariing this.

Thanks @BalletBabe, good advice and reminder to people.

I do have a Facebook account but use it very sparingly and rarely post anything to it. I do not use my current surname, and intentionally have left all profile questions blank, ie., no educational /work place information or area where I live.

A family friend chastised me a few weeks ago when he was trying to initiate a friend request; telling me I should list more identifying data so he could find me. I told him I intentionally set up my account that way.

Hate to burst everyone's information bubble, Your information is available to intelligence agencies. Same with your phone, Deleted messages from phone or computer are *NOT* deleted. Simply said! We are always being watched. We are never alone!! Even here on Qvc ever notice that Q sends you items you might be interested in? How did they know you like? Data!! My friends; Data maps! Gift of-NO privacy. Keep telling yourself that you are not being watched.

Whether this particular thing is a hoax or not, anyone who spends any time online doing *anything*, anyWHERE is having data collected. No matter how "safe" and not-involved, non-invaded you might convince your self you are...you're not. There's information out there about you. Any tiny bit of information that has ever been Public Information at any city, county or state office or the courts, is OUT THERE. Your phone number, address, who you live and bank with, your politics, divorced, sued, arrested, debts, bankruptcies - whatever you can imagine - it's there whether you go on FB or bank online or shop online. It's there. It's the price we pay for using the internet at all.

@Sweet_Serenity You are correct BUT facebook is really bad. Too many post all their information. You all can do what you want. Me hearing this from US Navy, I am not comfortable with it. I never did post all my information, but I wish I had never gone on.

Yes, it is true , no matter what you search for, you are followed and will see advertisments for those things. You should never click on them from other sites. We are all exposed being on the internet ,and on our ipads and phones. I am just saying post as little as you can.

The other thing that is bad is funerals. They know a service is being held and nobody will be home. Notify your local police as they will drive by your house and keep their eye out for you. They did it for me when my husband died. Do what is in your heart---just be as careful as you can. Also don't accept anyone to be your friend that you don't know. They are hackers in a lot of cases, and just because your friend is a friend of theirs, don't mean diddly ******. Don't accept them.

@Moonchilde People have a bad habit of putting every picture up of everything and everyone in the family. Then they want a lot of personal information that others don't ask for. I am just trying to pass along information. If you want to have an account enjoy. Just be careful. I had a friend that was selling a kitchen table, took picture and posted it on facebook with directions to her house. Needless to say she was robbed.

From what I've seen on these forums in regards to hurtful posts, Qvc has every right to keep the peace. Your comment doesn't change the facts Your information is collected.

I am not naive to think that tons of personal, financial, medical, etc. data isn't being gathered, collected, stored and analyzed on each and everyone of us by a whole barrage of agencies and businesses. Frankly, it has been done for years and it is what it is. Am I being singled out and "watched" by these enterprises, I rather doubt it.

I limit or shield what I put out on Facebook and social media to not make it so easy for individuals to access information about myself and my family.

A point to ponder...just think how much your mailman or woman knows about you.

FB is not making all posts public, that is rumor that has been checked and addressed (by many news outlets and FB). However, anything you post on the Internet is fodder for use by anyone with the capability to access it -- anything, anywhere. Your ISP holds all your Internet trafic; it's like your electronic DNA. The posts you write here in this QVC forum are no different than Facebook or any blog, forum, product site, etc. If someone is intent on getting your information, they can do so and connect the dots. Images and words on the Internet last even after you delete them.

But you're right, the smart thing is to not make is easy and safeguard your personal information and current whereabouts when you are on any site. Never post full birthdates, your relationship status, current location, or photos of kids tagged with their names.

Pretty sad that someone in the military as high up as you can get falls for a Internet hoax that has been going around for years.. btw, anyone can find anything online this is not just on fb. This has been happening way before fb.

I figured I would get a few sarcastic remarks. It is your business what you post, and what sites you go on. Hate to burst your bubble, but I think my son already knew that. It must be bad when they call a security meeting about internet sites. My son fell for no hoax! This is what he was told in this meeting. For your information , my son does not have a facebook account, because of security reasons.

I don't think it was my bubble that was burst. But maybe next time you may want to do research before posting something in the manner of scarying people. Not everyone is computer savvy and your thread was not imo posted in a manner to help but to worry and spread a hoax from 2+ years ago. I guess maybe if your son had a FB account he would have been aware of that as the rest of the world is..jmo.

Are you referring to the security warnings given to military personnel about posting anything that can identify them or their family because of the threat of terrorists obtaining and using the information to target them and their families? Such warnings are being given at all levels to personnel both home and abroad.
