Recs for a food and water bowl for a Pug

I occasionally pet-sit my friend's Pug and noted the food/water bowl cause him to struggle a bit to eat. He is older and has trouble getting around when he first wakes up. I've gifted him some treats that are supposed to help his joints.

The bowls are at floor level and the poor little guy seems to have trouble swallowing the food without raising up each time.

If anyone has a Pug or similar dog, I wonder if you have any ideas for a better food/water feeding station.

I thought perhaps one that is raised up would help, but wanted to ask.

A little background...

My friend is attentive to his dog needs, but I'm sure hasn't thought about this. He rescued the dog from the street and the owners (dog was chipped) would never return his calls.

I volunteer to take care of him when my friend goes out of town. I'd like to make it easier for him to enjoy his food.

@Witchy Woman I've seen on a cat rescue site, that there are dog/cat dishes that are slightly raised as many dogs especially need this.

I'd look at Chewy or Amazon. Thank you for caring so much for this doggy.

@Witchy Woman Okey dokey. I just did a search at Chewy and they have TONS of raised dog bowls! Some are just a little off the floor and some, for big dogs, are WAY up! Anyway, there is a huge selection to choose from.

Also, you might bring it to your friend's attention that his doggy needs this, maybe he could take a look at Chewy as well. And bless him for saving this dog whose "owners" obviously dumped him. JMO. That's why they wouldn't respond.

Check weathertechdotcom. They have food bowls in all sizes. We have them and they are great.

@Witchy Woman So sweet how much you care& help with your friends pug! The raised bowls help so much. My poodle had the same issue with his trachea and I even put books under his bowls to raise them a bit.

@Witchy Woman: First of all - thanks for caring so much for our sweeties that can’t speak for themselves. We ALL need you in our lives.

My family has fostered for several years now donkeys, cows, dogs and cats. Most all of them have their ways but the inside dogs are no exception. It is amusing to me to notice they all end up at the cat bowls for water and food. It is breakable pottery of some sort painted black and white maybe Snoopy-theme. Of course being cat dishes they’re very shallow so as not to get their ears wet. From the 60 lb. hound dogs to my six pound Pom they lick it clean. It holds little so I’m continually filling (just a little special moment they take turns). Some like stainless steel (my fav) elevated or on the floor. Couple of my older boys like clear glass always under my watch and lick it clean. I also use and like the Weathertech as someone suggested-mostly for pasture.

Oops, TMI ; could go on forever, point-being you will find a way and he’ll let you know when it’s right because he’ll sense how much you care and your friend will as well.

They are lucky to have you in their lives.

@Witchy Woman A raised bowl might be the answer. However, I have a flat-faced French bulldog and a flat-faced cat. They both have trouble eating out of regular food bowls but no trouble with their water bowl. I recently bought a bowl for my cat that has solved his problems.

It's called Dr. Catsby's Cat Food Bowl, and I ordered it from Amazon. His face can get in it better to get the food. My dog has a dog food bowl that I bought many years ago. It's pretty shallow and is easy for her to eat from. You may need a bowl like this to help the dog. I know if my dog's bowl ever breaks I will get him a Dr. Catsby's bowl. It's wonderful that you're so concerned for your friend's pug.

Edited to say: There is a bowl that's recommended for flat faced dog called the Enhanced Pet Bowl. I have a bowl that I bought for my dog several years ago that works well. It's called the FelliP Oblik Pet Bowl (Lordly Puss). I used it for a while but went back to the other one I hand since it works and is easy. The Oblik pet bowl is nice, though, and is slightly raised. It might work well for your friend's dog. They're both available on Amazon.

Why should dog owner also buy a dish - when dog goes home send your bowl with him........when dog comes back to your house he brings the bowl back. Money saver

Yes, older dogs do have special needs..................

@SXMGirl I was curious and Googled Pug Life and couldn't find anything except PugLifeHarness dot come. What is the pug life website's address (without giving the link)?

I did happen to come across the Better Business Bureau complaints on the Pug Life Store, though, and there are 404 complaints if that's the same website.

I did just look at BaxterBoo, a company that I have ordered from several times, and they have a short pet diner set for $29.97 with 5-star reviews. It is called Buddy's Best Feeder Pet Diner Set. I saw two different colors but there might be more.

Thanks to all for responding. I was just seeing my little buddy off to his owner who just arrived to pick him up. So funny that he takes forever walking from the house to the car. He is a sweet dog and I could tell he was happy to see his friend.

I'm not much of a dog person, and have one senior cat that only suspects there is a dog around

Thankfully, I've managed to keep the two separated, although I doubt the dog would mind. My cat would, however.

I'll spend some time searching your suggestions in the morning. Likely will get a set for his house and one for me so they don't have to move it back and forth.

They are funny and sweet little dogs. At least this one is. I enjoy having his company now and again. Their trouble breathing would worry me endlessly! This little guy gets winded quickly and does not seem to like the warmer weather.

I'll post back when I find his bowl!

Hi @Witchy Woman

I don't have familiarity with needs of pugs, young or old, since none of my small dogs were pugs or similar types.

But I can tell you I've used raised a feeding station for all of them. They all did well. (I even got one for my first dog in the 90s from Lillian Vernon that was wood with turned legs and painted, plus personalized with the dog's name.)

Also, I'd recommend several dishes since you'd feed a small dog at least twice a day. The dishes should preferably be of glass, ceramic, or stainless steel but not plastic. Basically, this makes it easier on you since you won't then have to wash it individually after each meal, just put the several bowls in the dishwasher after a day's or more meals. Although since you have him short-term, maybe that doesn't matter so much.

My dog has six glass bowls since she's fed three times a day and gets a fresh bowl for each meal. Then they all go in the dishwasher every two days. Anyway, that's the routine that works for us.

I got the feeding station at a local pet supply store, Pet Food Express, but am not sure that one is nationwide. The station is pretty basic and doesn't fit the bowls but I put in a larger bowl underneath to hold the smaller feeding dish. As a matter of fact, I still have an extra one in my garage from when I had more than one dog at a time. It would be perfect for pug height. Too bad you aren't next door!

You are such a sweetheart to do this for the little guy!

And if you're already doing all this and more, since you have a cat and presumably have WAY more experience at everything, then just disregard this whole message except my good wishes.

I laughed when I read your posts about having several dishes.

For years, I had multiple cats and....a stack of dishes a foot high for feeding them. Each meal started with clean dishes. I bought plastic child size dishes at the grocery store as they always had a supply of seasonal dishes that were perfect. My boys were slobs and pushed that wet food all the way to the edges

My little Pug buddy has a stainless steel dish, and I wash it with hot soapy water after each feeding. His water dish too. I know it's important to have clean dishes.

My sister in law drives me crazy as she has a Yellow Lab and his big dishes NEVER get washed. The couple of times I've had to pet sit him at her house, I was disgusted by it and washed them over and over.

I know I wouldn't want to eat out of a dirty dish, so why should my pet?

I don't get it, but I like your suggestions of having multiple dishes for my buddy.

Little Pug arrives with his crate and bed. And, I've gifted him a big dog bed/pillow that my cats never used.

So, his crate smells like home, and my bed smells like me.

I'll suggest that my friend make sure I have a towel from his house to cover the crate.

Oh what love!! I do the same thing when I’m at my daughter’s house - scrub those bowls. And, they use the self watering water dispenser (or whatever you call them) and they are really disgusting and a pain to clean. Anyhow, to each his own...

My theory is this - I treat my pets like I wish to be treated. I like fresh water and lovely, clean dishes and I just really feel if they could they would do the same for me. Life is good.

I use flat salad plates for dogs and cats, have a slight edge, but it is so easy for them to eat, the food is gone in a flash.
