I have no advice but can only commisserate. We have an 8 year old pointer mix who is high energy and barks at everything. It's annoying and we have tried several different ways to deter it from shaking a can of coins to startle her when she barks, a silent high pitched whistle, spritz with water etc. They all only worked temporarirly.

Some of my more tolerant nieghbors tell me that she is a good guard dog and don't mind but it's drives my husband and me crazy. But, other than the obnoxious barking she is the sweetest girl so I am thankful for that.

My 7 year old Jack Russell is a high energy dog, although she will lay around the house content just to have Her family home with her. Yes, she is spoiled but trained. My husband is retired so he is home the most with her during the week. When I am home she will usually follow me around . We have placed several different beds throughout the house for her. Only two rooms are off limits to her ( living room and one upstairs room )
She is trained to stay out of both rooms and only enters the living room when the
doorbell rings or she hears us talking to someone at the front door. During these times she barks for several minutes and really won't obey us. She never growls and we are not concerned that she will hurt the person(s) , however it is an occurrence we wish we could
break. We don't mind the barking at the sound of hearing the doorbell ring ,and her being
protective but the interaction that follies for several minutes after we allow a " new face" in to our home is the issue. We have tried to teach her that if we allow the person in our home she need not worry and to stop barking. This happens even with those we have
had over multiple times. She continues to bark at them as she follows them into the
house. The barking in these cases does not last as long but she will bark about a minute. It becomes a nuisance. It is a little easier when several people come at once as with parties. The focus is off one, and with several here she goes back and forth for a few minutes. Any suggestions? She is a loving , loyal, friendlly dog that we have trained in so
many other areas ( waits to eat at command, heel, etc, walk off leash, boundary trained, stays off the furniture except for her spot on family room couch, etc etc. We love her to pieces. She is an anxious dog and responds to each as we come home. She'll jump at
my husband, but I have trained her not to do so when she greets me. She is still anxious, but won't jump on me. She really responds to me best, but even I have no success when it comes to the front door. Any suggestions.? Or other Jack Russell owners?

Jack Russels are known to have a lot of high energy. did you know that when you got him? He is probably protecting your and his home .

Under NO circumstances swat him with the newspaper.I inmagine you were as shocked as I by that cruel reply.

I understand what you have going on only too well.I have a Maltese that does the same. I know he is just happy to see other people and wants to visit with the company too and gets excited because it is just he and I all the time. He does settle down after a little while. But If he is too unbearable,I just put him in the bathroom for a while and close the door untill he quiets down and them when he comes out ,he behaves himself.

don't worry too much about it. There is a thing sold on Amazon.com that omits a sound when you press it, we cannot hear but they do and apparebtly they don't like it. Sometimes I use it and it does work,it will stop his barking and he did learn not to bark when I used it. My grandson said he felt a little pressure in his own ears when I used it...lol.

Relax and love your precious furbaby.

We have a Minature Schnauzer we got when she was about 3yrs old from the Humane Society. Schnauzers tend to be barky also. She is allowed to bark in the yard within reason. In the house -no incessant barking. I accomplished this with a product called Pet Correct. It is sold on Amazon and is basically canned air. You dont spray it at the dog -just in the air. You have to be consistent and use it when the barking starts in the house. This does not scare Grace but she stops barking immediately. Like I said she was 3 years old and we were still able to break her of the barking. Jack Russels are a little more fiesty so good luck!

First of all, no dog is "too old" to learn.

And secondly, no dog should ever be "swatted" with anything.

I adopted my little dog when she was about 7. I've now had her about 5-6 years. She also used to bark. She still barks, which is OK, but she settles down.

There are many methods out there to use, such as training them to settle when someone comes to the door.

I did something a bit different in that whenever the doorbell rang like for a delivery, I would say "go see" and we'd go to the door and I'd let her look out. (The screen was always closed.) Eventually she learned that things or people went away so she didn't have to keep barking.

But when someone did come in, I asked people to leave her alone until she was ready to interact. She didn't do much barking once they were inside.

I don't know if this will help you. Physical punishment is, however, uncalled for and cruel

I know you love your dog but Jack Russells have to be the most annoying dogs in the world. My collie rescue group participates in a Celtic festival every year. We always end up next to the JRs who are also invited since they too are Celtic. There will be a bunch of them barking non-stop for hours and hours. It's even hard to have a conversation.

I've just given up on this one. Mostly because my hubby has spoiled ours by letting her bark like crazy when someone comes to the door. "It's her personality". She also goes a little nuts until she settles down. Ugh. Otherwise she's very trained and adorable. You have to pick your battles, lol. And they make good watchdogs. NO ONE will ever sneak up on us!

Thanks everyone for your input. This is our 2 nd JR. so we knew their high energy. Our last one did not bark at the doorbell when we were home, but we were told would bark some when we were gone and someone came to the door. Both are quite different. Can't imagine life without this 13 pounds of energetic love in our home🐶🐶🐶

I've got a neighbor who's Jack barks at air...........first, he is not trained. If he's ever on a leash (which is rare), he pulls so badly he almost chokes himself. Second, a few times he has gotten loose and all he does is run.....he's absolutely manic and won't come when called. She puts him out in a small cage.....big enough for him to do his business, but not big enough for exercise and the only time he isn't barking is when he's doing his "business". There are times when it drives me nuts. I've spoken to her about his incessant barking, but she claims she doesn't hear him. I know he's a stressed animal and needs to be trained.....that will never happen. Why she has such a high energy dog , I'll never know. I keep wondering if one of those secure wraps around him would ease his stress.....I definitely think he gets separation anxiety even in his cage. I wish I had an answer for you, but it sounds like the breed is high energy and easily stressed.

Can you have a door shut so she can not get to the front door when the bell rings? The bell rings she barks and goes to the first door and you pick her up and tell her good dog and take her to the door.

I am doing this in pieces to see if it will post.

Then she is in your control which makes a big difference..

I would not open a door without her being in your control

That what JRT's do. Mine barks but has calmed down now that he is 12.

If she is a good dog otherwise and only barks for a minute, it'll be okay.

Hang in there; three of my dogs barked like crazy at the doorbell. I had to open the door because when I asked who was there, I couldn't hear the reply. Now they've all gotten old and nobody barks at the doorbell because they can't hear it. New dog #4 doesn't bark because she doesn't know dogs bark at doorbells. She's never experienced it. She's a rescue from a hoarder situation always kept outside.

Your dog is doing her job so you need her job requirements to change. It is OK to bark at the doorbell but when she is reassured by you that you are aware she needs to get a treat and allowed to be greeted by the guest if appropriate. If not appropriate she needs to stay glued to your side.

I have a treat box by the door and if a relative comes in with barking stopping they get a cookie. I had had my girls stop in mid bark when they recognize the person.
