Question for those who use Greenies

What is the texture supposed to be like?

I have not used them in years and I just bought a box, are they supposed to be soft enought to bend? They are not super soft or mushy but they bend more than I would have thought.

I expected them to be firmer or hard like a bone. The softer texture surprised me, but maybe be how they are.

I just inspected a Greenie (regular size) and it easily broke in two. My dog gobbles

them up so fast that they don't stay in contact with his teeth very long.

Quite soft. I use them for my cat and it's easy to wrap a pill in them.

TRy Whimzee's. They take a lot longer for my dog to chew and he loves them.. greenies are too whimsy for him. Note, my dog is @ 65 lbs, pit, boxer and Shepard mix.

Yes, they are soft enough to bend. I've given each dog that I've had a Greenie a day for years. My last dog was 13 years old when he died, and he never had a dental. My Vet always said his teeth looked good.

My miniature poodle loves Greenies!! .... I give her one a day after she eats .... they are flexible but, don't break in half easily .... she loves them so much I am tempted to taste one ( HA HA NOT) ......😋

Not so funny, @January121. I have tasted every treat I have ever given my dogs. Believe it or not, most of them have absolutely no taste.

I don't personally give Greenies to my dogs. I believe that if you feed your dog good food, they won't have dental issues, unless of course, they have a predisposition for that. It is a fallacy to think that dry food keeps your dog's teeth clean because it is crunchy. Of course, you have to brush or at least wipe their teeth down periodically. I have never had any of my dog's teeth cleaned. I personally think it is a racket to make money. JMHO

Anytime I've ever bought greenies, they've been hard as a rock and there's no way I could bend or break one!

And these were sized for a Sheltie and a mini-Aussie, not big dogs.

I think that if they were soft enough to "wrap a cat treat in", then they may have been old or something.

Of course, I haven't used them in a while.

@KingstonsMom They used to be hard but have been bendable for many years.

@Jbar This is the reason that I never purchase these type of chew teeth cleaner produces for my dogs.... they gobble everything whole. Nothing gets chewed. I have big dogs. I brush their teeth.

Our Golden LOVES greenies... but I wonder what's in them? I don't have the packaging any more; I keep them in a Lock & Lock. Next time, before I buy them, I'll definitely check the ingredients carefully. There is so much *junk* in some dog food and treats. I've learned to be very careful.

I've also started to give her REAL FOOD in addition to her dog food - like half and half. I've used cooked sweet potato, quinoa, broccoli, mixed vegs., grated carrots, lentils, etc. We also purchased a food dehydrator to use on sliced sweet potatoes, instead of giving Milk Bone or whatever for treats. We want her to live a looooong time!

I think @spent2much, when you read the ingredients, you will discontinue buying them. Glycerin is the second ingredient and gelatin is the 5th. It sounds like you are doing a good job supplementing with "good" food. The dehydrated veggies are so much better than the Greenies. It says on the package "recommeded by experts" HA. I had a vet give a Greenie to one of my dogs. He gagged and then threw it up. The one thing on your list you might want to do more checking into is the lentils. That can carry a fungus, not unlike peanuts. Also rice tends to ferment in their gut. Just "food " for thought.

My vet advised me against them, due to a chance of choking on the small piece left when they get to the end. He had that happen to a poodle of his.

Sorry, I guess that i misunderstood what Greenies you were questioning. The only Greenies that I was aware of were the pill pocket ones. Oopsie.

We feed our Golden Retriever the grain free version of Greenies - have them on autoship with Amazon. They're also bendy.
