Update on Cat Bitting Himself /Steriod Shot

I wanted to provide an update on my cat who was biting and I tried several food, he got a steriod shot on June 30th and ALL things were great of ONE WEEK. You are not going to believe this but the bitting is slowly starting again. I can NOT believe it. I thought the shot would "WORK" for several weeks.

I did see results for at least one full week, I had no bitting at all, then it slowly started, a bit here on the paw, a bit there....now we are almost at 100%. We are maybe at the 80% level.

It is not constant biting, but it is starting again. The hair on his paw started to fill out and is really almost back but I'm so scared things will go back.

What do I now?

I want to try a new litter, I need to read how to switch litters correctly.

I'm sorry for you and Socks that the steroid effects didn't last long. The shot only treats the symptoms not the cause so it's still going to come back. Have you been to a dermatologist? Has Socks been allergy tested? It could tell you alot. If you think it's behavioral Overgrooming a behaviorist may be able to prescribe something for Socks. Your General Vet has covered the regular treatments. It may be time for a specialist.

I'm so sorry the shot only worked for two weeks. How frustrating for you, and I am sure your cat is really bothered by this, too. It's too bad there isn't a pill for this for cats like there is for dogs. I agree that maybe you should have him allergy tested. I don't know how to tell you to switch cat litters, but that would probably be a good idea, too. You could Google it, but I imagine you just slowly start mixing the new litter in with the old. You could also set up another litter box near the first one and see if your cat will start using the new litter box.

We went through that with our cat. The shots/oral meds helped then when the dose was up she started doing it again.

There were no changes around here, so I didn't think it was allergies. The vet said if it's not an allergy, it's probably her nerves. We noticed that she starts doing it when there are emotional triggers (4th of July neighborhood fireworks, neighbor's dogs/cats come into our yard, being left alone more than usual, etc.). We pick her up and cuddle her when we notice she's starting to bite herself and pull out her hair. Giving her lots of attention and a few special cozy safe spots around the house have helped.

@Happiness Is Inside JOB, That is very sad. How long has he been biting himself? Watch out for steroids. I have to be on steroid pills for the rest of my life but I am a fairly low dose now 4 mg a day. Can you get an answer from that guy that has the cat program and correct their behavior? I feel so bad for your cat and you.

I am on chewy right now reading about different litters and I'm looking at an hypo allergenic litter now.

I am so sorry that you both are going through this. Many years ago, one of our cats had a similar problem as she bit the hair off from her back end to her tail. Unfortunately, the product that we used, which was successful almost overnight, is no longer made. We bought it from QVC when they had Dr. Jane, a NYC veterinarian, as one of their vendors. Some on here might remember her gold pills. They were liquid capsules that you broke open and put in food. You might want to mention this to your vet, who might have an idea as to what might have been in the capsules.

Thanks, the vet gave me an omega 3 liquid that I put in his food, I wonder if Dr Jane's item was similar.

I did order a new liter from chewy. I'm using a scoopable litter with clay and I read online that some cats (FEW) but some are allergic to clay o I ordered a non-clay litter.

We will see how this goes.

Be sure to put the non-clay litter in a separate litter box near the other litter box. Don't switch litters cold turkey. Your cat may refuse to use the litter box and go outside the box if you switch too quickly.

Provide you cat with perches so that he can look outside and "read his newspaper".

Provide "Cat TV" by placing small aquariums where he can watch the fish.

I switched my cat to Feline Pine litter a few years ago - it's much better and healthier. He is on steroids for feline lymphoma, but he also gets 1/2 a zyrtec daily for allergies and asthma. First thing I would do is stop all dry food especially if it contains grain. I would stick to a pure protein diet and then I would look into holistic medications - check out Petwellbeing. I have purchased a few items from them and it has helped my boy tremendously. Good luck.

@Happiness Is Inside JOB - I bought what they call a pill gun or popper. You put the pill in it and it shoots the pill in before they even realize what happened. It's very quick and painless.

Did you check out the website I suggested. If you call them, they will make recommendations. My boy is on lifegold for cancer. It can't save him, but it has extended his quality of life and his vet is amazed he is even still here. I can't recommend their products enough. Good luck

Yes, I did go to the website - what a wealth of information. I also went to a cat owners message board and read about others experiencing similar problems.

I ordered the zyrtec from amazon, the Pack Pharmaceuticals Cetirizine Hydrochloride 5 mg, 100 and the pill pockets.

We will "SEE" if this works.

Also I read on the site, I did not order anything yet. THe litter arrives today from amazon and I'm going to follow the advice to have two boxes side by side to see how this works out.

I will post an update and I am very thankful for your comments and tips.

Good luck @Happiness Is Inside JOB - Please only give 1/2 of a zyrtec. Never a full pill. Also, if I may, you may want to consider bathing his itchies with a pure oatmeal bath. I actually give my boy a hot oil massage with JM argan oil when he gets flaky. I just put a little bit in my hand and rub his whole body and then comb him - then he sits outside and it soaks in and all his flakiness disappears.

As to the litter, you can slowly convert by mixing the old and the new together and over the course of a few weeks, add more and more of the new until the transition is complete. Never just change from one to other. I personally wouldn't have 2 litter boxes. Too confusing for them.

I never tried pill pockets - mine would never eat them. I have a pill popper - that is how the vet techs are able to pill your cat so easily. Please keep me posted on your progress. Good luck
