I do it myself. One of my previous dogs would not willingly let you clip his nails. So dh would hold him with his head behind his arm and toweled while I clipped. Luckily he was short haired and didn't require any hair grooming.

There are some groomers that specialize in grooming 'difficult' dogs and even cats (no sedation involved) in our area.

He was a cocker Spanial. He would not let ME brush him. If I hit a snarl he would snap at me! He had bit me several times. He was a difficult dog... I had him from a puppy and he lived to be about 14. He just always had this dr jeckle mr hyde personality... nice one minute and nasty another. I knew that anyone else might put him down, but, I knew how to deal with him so I did because I loved him. He could be so so sweet.... and that is what I loved about him.

He went to a groomer for all the years I had him. I would always tip them really good. I would ask if he was difficult.. the girl always said no. But, I think they probably muzzeled him and just did not tell me he was difficult to be nice to me. He always looked so nice when done! They would put perfume and bows in his hair That lasted all of about two minutes when home.

I think you just need to find a groomer who is willing to put up with your difficult pup. They are out there. I would tip them REALLY WELL. And tell them up front about his issues. Also, there are herbal supplements for dogs to calm them and make them less anxious. I would sedate him very well prior to his appointment. That may help some.

You are not alone is dealing with a difficult pup.

When you find a reputable groomer I would ask to stay and watch them groom your dog. I have heard horror stories about groomers mistreating dogs. A mean dog would be tempting for a mean person to mistreat, and you would never know it. I had a dog a long time ago that didn't like to be groomed, and I always stayed and watched. When I was there he was fine.

I trust my groomer. It's the same one I've always used. I will be very upset when he retires. It will be a while though. Good luck finding a new groomer. You could check reviews on Yelp. After you do that, you could call and ask if you can stay and watch and get a feel for the groomer.

With my Darcy, she is terrified of water, so I bathe her myself and let the vet tech trim her nails. Happy is better, but I do the same for her. I want their lives to be as stress-free as possible. What I would suggest is to find someone that your dog likes and stick with them. It may take just baths for a few visits before adding anything else.

Check with your local vet, I have my dogs nails cut there and I do the rest myself with giving him a bath and blow dry.

I also have a pair of my own pet clippers to trim around the paws and problem areas.

When anyone gets a puppy or new dog, work with the paws, message them, touch them and get them used to you handling their body, it gets easier in later years to trim and groom them.

@tockerman Our rescued standard schnauzer came to us at seven months old with issues. There were two young boys in his original home and I am convinced to this day that something happened there ~ as boys will be boys. You could not touch the dog on his backside or under the belly. Even the vet has to muzzle him. When he was new to us, and while bathing him one day I reached around to wash his hip rather than trying to turn him in the tub and he bit me so hard he drew blood. I had two distinct sets of teeth on my arm. Luckily, we still have him and have been as patient as anyone could be. I had a lot of difficulty finding a groomer that could work with him. Two left the area and the one we have now is comfortable with him and our dog with her. She has learned a lot working with him for so many years. I called the original owner of our dog after we had him for a couple months and she swore nothing ever happened to cause our dog to ******, but I never believed her. We've had him for eight years. He is very loving, loyal, and affectionate, but still very tense if you pet his backside.

Not only would I ask my vet for recommendations, I would ask all of the employees who work for the vet!
