I just got some Metabolic prescription dry dog food from my vet who is putting my 2 dogs on a diet. It is expensive, so I was looking on the internet for other places that sell it. I came across a consumer site that showed 171 people dissatisfied with Hills prescription dog food. It actually made many of them sick. Now I don't know if I want to continue on the plan or buy a different diet food. It is around $40 for a 6lb bag. The vets must get a huge discount for selling this product.

It's the only food that helped to straighten and keeps my little girl's tummy doing the right thing. It is expensive, and we mix in now other canned dog food, but she can't go totally on another food. Touch tummy. It saved us all a huge headache.

My 9 yr old Maltese/Shi tzu is on it and I have had no issues. The Vet recommended Senior 7+.

We tried another brand and she wouldn't eat it.

It is cheaper than taking her to the Vet because she got that watery diharea and would need fluids.....

I don't know if your pups have any conditions that woud require PRESCRIPTION food for weight loss, but if they are healthy and you are just unsure how much to feed them, Call the Vet let them know what food you have them on and ask them for a feeding amount. measure out the total days portion into a container and then feed them ONLY from that amount. you can split it up into several feedings throughout the day if you think that will keep them less hungry. Also use portions from that container as their treats for the day. Extra food is extra calories. Training sessions count as exercize. Putting your pups through their paces on leash will stimulate them mentally as well as physically. I think of Prescription diet as "Hospital Food" Limitation diet for a medical problem. Unless your puppies need monitored weight loss, you have options.

There's no need to put your dog on a prescription food if it's only for weight loss. Just feed less food and exercise more. Maybe take your dog on a little longer walk each day. Less food and more exercise is the answer. I would continue whatever food you're using now unless it isn't a high quality food. If it isn't I would switch to one that is and not to a prescription diet.

My dog gained a couple of lbs. without me realizing it, and my Vet told me to reduce her food.

It seems the vets push hard to sell this food. We fell for the hype and put our two mini schnauzers on it years ago and would never use it again. Our little guy had nothing but problems and we lost him too young. We now use Natural Balance and have since we got our new dogs eight years ago. They are both extremely healthy. Every dog that comes here dives into their food bowl. LOL I've had friends switch their dogs to this brand. It's not as inexpensive as some dog foods are, but it's so good for our fur babies.

my little diabetic shihtzu has been eating canned wd hills for 5 years ,he has pancrelatively issues if eating other foods ,helps keep his weight ,glucose stable,He also gets boiled chicken ,fresh green beans. It was up to 4 dollars a can ,my little guy goes through 11/2 large cans a day,we were buying it from the vets .I finally decided to check around and Chewys had it for 14 dollars less for 12 cans, plus free 1 day delivery.Much nicer then going in to vets waiting for them to check records etc.Chewys called my vet confirmed a prescription and am now on auto delivery. In ny state the vet must allow prescriptions to source meds and food in other retailers. So for us the vet is not making any profit..Might check Chewys for the price . Also Dr mercola,s website has been listed as not reliable and false claims on many sites.. The vets must get a huge discount for selling this product.

I can't speak to how good Hill's is (I use an Rx Purina food for my cat), but you might want to see if your vet would drop the price based on this:

Hill's Prescription Diet Metabolic Weight Management Chicken Flavor Dry Dog Food is $23.49 for a 6-lb bag at Chewy. Two larger sizes also available. Free shipping on orders $49+.

My Vet told me that the reason they charge more for meds and other things they sell at their clinic is because they don't buy the large quantities that the big box and internet stores do. I doubt they could afford to match Chewy's price.

That's too bad. My vet, who's a solo practitioner in a rural area, meets or beats Chewy on Purina's Critical Nutrition (for gaining weight). I buy it from him by the case. If the Hills works for your dogs, I'd suggest getting scrip from the vet so you could buy from Chewy and bring the price down.

At $40 for 6 pounds, that's $6.67/lb. Chewy's price is $3.92/lb for the same bag. The 17.6 lb bag, for $59.99, is $3.41/lb. The 27.5 lb bag, for $84.49, is $3.07/lb. All of those Chewy's prices can be reduced by $1 to $4 a bag if you set up the purchase as an autoship. I haven't factored in sales tax or shipping because those depend on your location and order volume (free ship over $49)

Other firms may meet or beat Chewy, but I've been buying from Chewy for years with no snags, fast delivery, and it's very easy to modify the autoship--skip a delivery, change the frequency, etc.

Best wishes to you and your chubs. I have a zaftig cat and know it's very hard to diet these guys.

They include "Your Porkiness," "Mr. Balloon," Get over here you big fat thing" (and he always comes), and Chunky Monkey. He's an orange boy, a true love bug, but he's over 18 times his rescue weight of one little pound.

I feel awful because, although he's the most food-motivated cat alive, I'm the keeper of the food. My inattention to his theft of his sister's high-cal Critical Nutrition is part of why he's gotten so lardy. It's hard to diet cats, and you have to do it slowly, because they can get toxic liver or something lethal if they lose weight too quickly. Sigh.
