When he pulls one direction, turn around and go the other way. You can hold a treat in your hand and when he walks on the loose leash reward frequently. Clicker training works wonderfully in these situations.

Once he is walking properly on the leash, you can work at getting him to stay calm when around other dogs or people. Start at a distance. As long as he stays clam you can SLOWLY work at moving closer. Once he starts to react, MO email aways pend a few days at distance where he is calm before you try and get closer again.

Adopted a 3 year old chihuahua / basenji mix dog about a year ago. Everything about him is perfect except for one problem I have when walking him.

Anytime he sees a dog or a person he pulls real hard forward, then side to side. He tries to walk real fast to catch up with the person and/or person and dog. If someone walks by us he will growl at them. If that person pets him, my dog is fine with it and stops growling and does not bite.

How do you stop this behavior? Someone suggested the trick of putting pennies in a can and rattle it to scare him. Has anyone tried that.....does it work? Or, any other suggestions.

That is actually the proper way to walk with a dog anyway. Now she generally doesn't react to many distractons except for those darn squirrels.

When I am out walking my two dogs, I run into many leash reactive dogs. Big dogs and little dogs. They go nuts barking, pulling acting like they want to attack my sweet dogs that do not react back, but keep on walking ignoring them. I feel sorry for the owners with these dogs that are so leash aggressive. I think a personal trainer is needed as this aggression is not healthy or good and can get worse.

We use a harness on our GSD's because the female was all over the place when walking. I purchased the one from QVC that was woven and it was so much nicer and easier for them. I also use the two leash system with a standard lease on the collar in addition to the harness when we are in public places (like the vet's). It keeps them under control and really curbs that running wild situation.

They go nuts barking, pulling acting like they want to attack my sweet dogs that do not react back, but keep on walking ignoring them. I feel sorry for the owners with these dogs that are so leash aggressive. I think a personal trainer is needed as this aggression is not healthy or good and can get worse.

Barking and lunging are not always a sign of aggression. There are many dogs that get over stimulated in those situations. They are not necessarily looking to attack rather just want to have someone exciting to play with them. I have one of each, the over stimated one who wants to play is harder to manage than the unfriendly one.

@CrazyDaisy That is not a "play" reaction... with growling and hackles up on their back... pulling at the leash.... that is an aggressive reaction and can lead to a dog biting and fighting on and off leash. These dogs need more than treats to distract them, they need one on one time with a professional trainer.

Will just have to agree to disagree. Having worked with both types of dogs, there are differences that most do not recognize.

Can you take him anywhere to socialize him with other dogs (dogs that are friendly, that is)? Voice commands are very important. Until a dog gets the "sit, stay, off, come" commands down pat, they sometimes tend to have at least one major problem. If you can't fix it....find someone who can and be consistant.....don't let it go...not even once. Practice...practice...practice!!!! It is so worth it to get help if you run into trouble. It will pay for itself a thousand times over.

I have a spray bottle w/ water (very fine spray). When training Sadie & Molly not to jump on people, "no bark", and be non-reactive to other dogs on walks, they got a quick spray on their snout, never in eyes.

There are various no-tug harnesses and snout type harnesses you can use for dogs that pull on leashes on walks. They work great on any of my dogs that have pulled on the leashes when out for walks.
