My ex husband 25 years ago said our dog had the flu when they were moping or not feeling well. I think he meant it as a joke but it can be true? I have heard of respiratory issues and flu shots for dogs from Vets.

I hope my dogs don't get the flu. They are never around other dogs, so maybe that will help.

The Vet we go to is super expensive. I guess they all are. One of my dogs had a ear infection two weeks ago...yeast.

The first visit was $371.20.. The recheck was $179.84 and they want me to bring the dog for another recheck on May 13. I cancelled that appointment.

My dogs got their flu vaccines this year since they are required by their boarding facility. We haven't had to board our dogs in over 10 years so we had to make sure they could meet all the requirements. Dogs are at risk for a lot of things if they are out and about with you.

I think its been referred to as Kennel cough in the past. I had to board my 2 border collies and they both got the shots. 1 got kennel cough any way.

I would do my due dilgence and make sure you read the vaccine insert BEFORE taking any risks getting the shot. They also make mRNA versions of shots I would NOT give my dog.

FWIW, DH has given canine vaccines, and is in favor of them for boarding or around other dogs. He says they are perfectly safe. They would have never been approved otherwise.

@Carmie - Just my own personal opinion from what I've seen - you can look around and find good independent veterinary practices that don't charge a fortune.

Like a lot of independent businesses being swallowed up by larger companies, VCA is buying a lot of practices. Blue Pearl is buying 24-hour emergency hospitals. I noticed a huge difference when they took over our local emergency center. They might charge more than the independent ones. But just like everything else in the world today, prices are going up.

Canine influenza (flu) is NOT the same as kennel cough (bordetella).

My dogs are boarded when we travel, and they regularly receive these vaccines/vet procedures:

Canine influenza vaccine

Lyme vaccine

Rabies vaccine 3 years

Bordetella booster

Fecal test

Lepto 4-Way booster

DA2P/Parvo 3 year booster

Of course, they also are given flea/tick prevention as well.

Yes, veterinary services can be costly, but oh my, the field has made tremendous advances.

By the way, I have pet cats and birds as well. I rarely need to take a bird to the vet, but when I do, I have to sign a form that says that a bird has the potential to die of FRIGHT the minute it is touched by a stranger, and the vet cannot be responsible.

I am still waiting for the cure for cancer for humans AND pets.

My VET is independent....husband and wife team. They have recently hired an older Vet who works with them. I especially get upset my the fact that they will not write prescriptions. You have to buy the drugs from them and they overcharge.

They're close and they can get my dogs appointments quickly, so that is good.
