does anyone else have a cat who never makes biscuits?

Our adopted adult cat, Socks, NEVER makes biscuits, not interested in boxes or bags, won't look out windows, won't sit in a circle. We look to enrich her experiences and come up empty with each try. She likes catnip, so I get catnip toys. She gets bored with wands. Won't bat balls of any kind, Treat dispensing balls are left alone.

Her former owner was 40 and died. Socks looks to go into the garage. We assume that she communicates with her there. We have both had dogs that communicated with spirits.

The lack of making biscuits baffles and worries me. Any ideas / insights?

If Socks is healthy and otherwise happy, I'd say just let her be. She's enjoying life on her own terms.

Every cat (or other animal) is an individual, just as we are.

I have had cats that didn't do biscuits or look windows (indoor cats). Just how they were.

I have also had doggie rescue who got so excited to see a particular type of man on walks. He would run up to the puzzled guy 🥲 just broke my heart.

@Queen of shop it's what they sometimes call kneading. Kittens do it to stimulate the mother to make milk. As they age, a lot of cats do it when you're petting them and they're happy or before they lay down somewhere like they're preparing their spot.

I have one that doesn't do it. He'll crawl up in my lap and just sit until either I HAVE to get up or he decides to leave. He doesn't play with wand toys or balls, but occasionally will find just a piece of cardboard that he'll have fun slapping around. He doesn't get into boxes either and rarely looks out the window. He was born in a shelter and has never been outside and is afraid of anybody that comes in the house besides me, my husband, and my daughter once he figures out it's her.

My other one only kneads when he wants me to get up in the morning and feed him.

Not a cat, but I have a golden retriever that doesn't retrieve, doesn't like walks and is afraid of the doorbell...whaaat??!

As long as she's happy and healthy I say let her be. I have a 5 year old who I found at 4 weeks old. She only purrs when she is making biscuits. She just started realizing she can purr at other times too. I basically had to teach her how to be a cat, with the help of a few of her brothers and sisters of course. Your kitty might still be adjusting to her new life. Kitties do what they want when and if they want.

Kneading, not interested in boxes or bags, bored quickly with toys, etc., is often kitten only behavior. I've been a cat mom for 50 years, so please be aware that I am not a professional, but I do have experience. It is good to keep trying to get Socks to move around for exercise, but I wouldn't worry about it or push the issue too much with an adult cat.

Speaking strictly from my own experience, the cats I've had that were outdoor before they showed up rarely kneaded. The one I adopted from the shelter as a kitten and who had been raised there only started kneading after he had been here for quite a while. Now he does it frequently, but he's also the only cat I've had that wants to be attached to me constantly.

The making biscuits thing is what kittens originally do to stimulate milk on a momma's nipple. If the baby was fostered and bottle-fed by a human at any point, that might explain their biscuit-making lack of experience.

We have a few that don't make biscuits, and I have a few that I have never heard purr. One of them sleeps with me every night and has just began crawling on to our laps. . .he has lived in our home with us for 7 years. Another is very relaxed, lies on his back, loves boxes and is very food driven but I've never heard him purr. Rescue kitties come with baggage, they may never really unpack it. I have one that not only makes biscuits he tries to suckle on my shirt collar.

@Still Raining-your comment about the dog being excited about broke my heart too.

He's an adult cat. Leave him alone. Let him be who he is. Cats often lose interest in toys and pleasing their owners as they get older. I'm curious. What does "sit in a circle" mean? Honestly I wouldn't mind if the 14 week old kitten we adopted did less...lol. He's like a whirling dervish.

Socks sounds very content to be - A CAT. Yes, I've had a few cats that never seemed interested in toys, birds, windows, etc., but were the sweetest, gentlest animals in the world. Each one is different. If Socks is otherwise healthy, I'd just let her be. So sad she lost her owner. They do get attached to their one and only, but I wouldn't worry. She sounds like she's okay. My big boy Jasper never played with toys, never made biscuits, was bored by birds, but loved me. He was always next to me, slept with me and would cry when I went out. I was in Europe for about ten days and my mother stayed here to watch him. She said he sat and cried the whole time. THEN when I got home, he IGNORED me for several days. Yeah, that was my punishment - LOL. I miss the big fella.

@NYwoman please excuse my ignorance. We never had cats, as DH is allergic to them, and have not been around them. What do you mean by "making biscuits"? Is this a personality trait found in cats or is this more of a behavior?

It's a type of kneading cats do on blankets and other such items. They knead their mamas in early life, so it's a habit that many cats stay with as they settle in to a warm and cozy place.

We have adopted a rescue adult Ragdoll cat, who only occasionally will knead. She is very independent, but seems to have adjusted to us and her new space-- loves to sit in her cat tree and look out the windows. She is not a cuddler, unlike our previous beloved kitty kat

I have owned two gray and white cats, an orange tabby, a blue point Siamese, and 3 seal point Siamese, and can't recall any of them doing that. I only in the last 10 years learned what it was and heard it called making biscuits.

I have seen cats that did that, but ours never did. Had one Siamese that possibly made hash, but that's a whole other deal with claws. . .
