Decided to Try Being a Foster Mom for a Senior Dog

My dog, Brandy, passed away 7 months ago and was almost 15. Recently, I have been checking all the local shelter websites looking for a dog to possibly adopt. It finally dawned on me today that I think being a foster is what I need to do. It's not permanent and if it turns out to be a great match, then I can adopt the dog. I feel relieved to have made this decision. I filled out a foster application for a local rescue that just takes in senior dogs. They have an 11-year old terrier mix who sounds very sweet. Will have to see what they reply about my application and if I am selected to be her foster.

@Catty2 - Only special people foster or adopt senior dogs. We've known people who adopt dogs expected to live a year or two, and 5 years later they're still enjoying their home. It's amazing at what love can do!

You're in good company- Mally from Mally Beauty adopted a senior dog. There are posters here who have too. I hope they chime in!

What a good decision. I am sure the shelter appreciates your volunteering to foster.

I know our rescue group always needed fosters. Many times they would get a dog and didn't have a history of the dog's health or disposition. So a foster was so valuable. The foster was able to get to know the dog. And since the rescue group did not necessarily know if the dog had health concerns, A foster without other dogs was a premium. In case there was a health issue that other dogs should not be exposed to.

I love to see someone considering a senior dog, since they need love, too, and are usually passed up for the pups. You can find a wonderful senior companion. The period of adjustment may take a little time, but it may prove to have many rewards. I hope you're selected and good luck. Let us know.

One of the Happiest, Most Affectionate 🤗 dogs I’ve known is curled up next to me. He was a Senior rescue. A Blessing.

*** Nothing is guaranteed, but this particular dog is perfectly house trained.

You are doing a nice thing for a Senior dog and for yourself!

My husband and I have recently taken in Jake a 14 year old dog. He's great. He needed a home and someone to love him after his Dad Dwight died in November. He was so sad and now we see a big change in him. He knows we are his family now and we can feel the love coming from him. I know he feels the love coming from us too. It's a win win for all of us. How wonderful for you and whatever dog you get to foster. I am a foster failure. I seem unable to give my foster pets back. I took in a six year old cat after my beautiful orange cat had to be put down last year. I decided to keep that semi-feral cat. Then, about four weeks ago, I saw a post on the NextDoorApp about a cat who had to be moved from place to place because of her personality. I took her sight unseen and already have decided to adopt her if that option presents itself. She is a great girl, about three years old, who will not do well with children or with those who need a cat who behaves predictably. She cannot be left alone because of destructive behavior. But I am falling in love with her.

I am happy for you and for whatever lucky senior pet(s) you get to foster.

I adopt senior goldens. So far I've had three. The one I have with me now is 15yo. I wouldn't have it any other way.

No,, nothing yet. Many of them are run by volunteers who also work full-time so it may take awhile to review the application and get back to me. Will let you know when I hear anything.

Did you meeet your pup yet? Technically, he's a senior, but lots of terriers live beyond 11 or 12 and are quite active, so he may keep you active too with walks, etc. Keep us posted on how it goes. My terrier is 12, has arthritis but still runs and plays.

Haven't heard back from the rescue yet. As a child, our first family dog was a terrier mix. My dad brought home a little black puppy when I was 2 years old. Smokey lived to be 18 years old.

We adopted Snowball just before Christmas. He is an 8 year old maltipoo. It was quite a demanding process with interviews, references and a house visit. We lost one of or dogs the year before and were absolutely heartbroken. Over 3 months in now and it's one of the best decisions we have ever made.

It took time for him to settle with our other 14 year old dog but they now seem to respect each other's space. Giving Snowball a second chance in our home has been so rewarding with lots of love and laughs.

Good luck on this journey, we had some disappointments along the way but we believe it was our turn with Snowball, he is a complete joy. The right one for you will be waiting with open paws lol.

I haven't heard back from the rescue group but went on their website last night. The dog I was interested in fostering has been adopted. That is a great thing for her. They don't have that many dogs and none of the other ones really fit what I'm looking for. Our local humane society always needs fosters but they usually have medical issues and want the foster to take them to/from vet appointments, etc. They are over an hour away so that isn't going to be an option for me. I will check other rescues and see what I can find.
