Himalayan cats

I have an 18-year-old Himalayan cat who is just a hoot; she's so funny and comical in so many ways. But I'm wondering about something:

Are Himmies "talktive"? She talks to us all day long and if something displeases her, Madam Fullcharge lets us know in no uncertain terms. Or is it that Himmies just get more talkative as they age? We adopted her 2 years ago when she was "only" 16 years old and I don't remember her being so communicative; I also worry about her health too--that she might be feeling unwell and this is a symptom.

I hope not because right now my plate is pretty full, with several sick family members (and one of which I fear may not be with us much longer) plus my own health issues. I don't want to lose my baby on top of all that.

@GoneButNotForgotten It very well could be a sign that something's wrong. I had a very talkative Scottish Fold cat and waited too long to take him in. He was in kidney failure.

I would take your cat in and have blood work done. I hope nothing is wrong.

Himalayan cats are a combination of Siamese and Persians, so have traits from both breeds. They tend to be easy going, lap cats but also are vocal like Siamese. I wouldn't worry about her talking so much, as that's a personality trait.

However, if you're uncertain you could have her checked out just as a precaution. I would watch for any other signs that don't seem normal.

The concerning part is that THIS cat has not been so vocal previously, so it's not likely to just be a 'breed trait'.

I would make a vet appt. myself.

Wow.....I believe 18 years is way beyond their life span. I would definately have your kitty have a wellness check.

Absolutely if it is a change in personality.

At her age, renal failure or hyperthyroidism is always a possibility. One of my male cats started vocalizing a lot more. He had other symptoms (little weight loss, dull coat) and has hyperthyroidism. Very common and deadly if untreated. They can get high blood pressure leading to blindness. I went through that with one of my older cats.

Get your sweet cat checked.

I adopted a 7-year old kitty in January of this year. Although he seemed to attach himself to me immediately, it's only in the last few months where he started talking.

I've had purebred Siamese in the past. One of the wasn't much of a talker; the other 2 were.

I would take my Himmie to the vet just to have her checked out.

@GoneButNotForgotten - Your kitty sounds wonderful! I agree with the others that you should take her to get a checkup. But Himalayans can be talkative, and they can live around 20 years. She may be talking to you because she wants to, and because she feels comfortable with you!

Definitely going to take her; I think she's just about due for a checkup anyway.

Missy is so sweet and so funny too. Yesterday we had a new bed delivered and she was so startled, I thought her little blue eyes were going to pop out of their sockets; she ran down the hall so fast her paws barely touched the floor (and this is a cat who will be 19 in August) and her tail puffed up like I've never see before. She's quite a little kitty.

Working out an actual date is going to be daunting; my husband is sick from the after effects of a recent medical procedure and my sister is finally going to have surgery too, also to repair the after effects of cancer a few years ago (all 3 of us are in our 70's). It's complicated because my DH and I are going to be part of her after care so we have to go with her to all her medical appointments and there are several between now and the end of the month. I'm supposed to be having physical therapy on my left leg, hip, and spine but I'm putting it off till my sis is all taken care of.

I'm going to to look into whether or not Medicare can help with some of that and if anyone has any suggestions about how I go about doing this, I'd like to hear from you.

@GoneButNotForgotten Please don't wait too long to take her. When my cat got sick many years ago and started vocalizing a lot I was getting ready to have a hysterectomy. I put off taking him to the Vet, and by the time I took him he was in kidney failure, and we really couldn't help him. It was awful.

I have a himmie as well. She is the love of my life. She is our pampered princess for sure. Himmie's are chatty but mine is more chatty with my husband because she wants him to massage her. With me not so much. I agree with others, just go for a check up to rule out anything. U may wanna look into holistic vets in your area too. They offer amazing things like accupuncture, supplements that are gentle for kitties.
