VA Bans Cosmetic Animal Testing

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) has signed the Humane Cosmetics Act, banning cosmetic animal testing and animal tested cosmetics.

The method involves testing out household products on animals for safety before they are sold on the market for human use.

Virginia is the fourth state to adopt the law which will go into effect beginning on Jan. 1, 2022, according to ABC News.

California was the first state to ban animal-tested cosmetics in 2018, with Nevada and Illinois adopting similar laws the following year.

The ban in Virginia is part of a larger effort to stop animal testing on a federal level, according to ABC. Virginia Rep. Don Beyer (D) announced that he plans to reintroduce federal legislation that would prohibit animal testing across the U.S.

"Great news! Virginia leading the way in banning cosmetic testing on animals, one of a handful of states to do so. I will be reintroducing federal legislation, the Humane Cosmetics Act, to make this the standard across the country," Beyer wrote on Twitter.

Animal tested products are also banned by the European Union, the United Kingdom and India.

This is why i do not buy Avon or Mary Kay.

There should not be any harmful chemicals in our products that WOULD NEED tested on animals. This is one reason why the cancer rate is so high in the U.S. Various european countries do not use some of the ingredients that the FDA allows in our products.

just curious: has Virginia allowed outlawed de-clawing of cats? Anyway, banning animal testing of cosmetics is a step in the right direction.

I wish the Feds would outlaw all declawing.

@seaBreeze I agree 100%. And all the junk that is in our food! Ugh! There is no reason for all the fake coloring and such. I truly believe that is why we have so much cancer and autism in this country.

I totally agree with you, but I'll take it one step further to include 'vanity mutilation', like cropping ears, docking tails, etc.

Good to hear no cosmetic testing on animals.

I wonder why abortion is legal in the state of Virginia?
