How to get rid of skunk smell

Well, thats just it. A friend just texted me, her dog got sprayed by a skunk. I told her all I have heard of is giving the pooch a bath and using tomato juice, but haven't had one of mine sprayed. I really don't know. Does anyone have any ideas? tia

@happycat - Google "dog sprayed by skunk" and you'll get a lot of advice. Whether your friend will have any of the things on hand to bathe her dog with is another matter. (One of the first things to come up, when I googled it, was a homemade remedy.)

I'd make sure I kept the dog isolated until she can bathe it though. If that smell gets into the house and/or furniture it can take a while to go. And it's an acrid smell, as I'm sure she knows by now.

ETA: Here's the first homemade "recipe":

The Best Solution

¼ cup of baking soda.
1-2 teaspoons of mild dishwashing detergent like Ivory Snow.
1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide solution.
Mix in a bucket and use immediately.
Work the foaming mixture well into the coat.
Leave on for five minutes.
Rinse with warm water.
Follow with dog shampoo if desired.

@happycat - Last year my truck got sprayed by a skunk. I had it parked next to the house and something must've spooked a skunk that's around here and maybe surprised him/her between my truck and the side of the house.

OMG, I could smell it inside the house that night. Thank goodness it didn't get inside my truck, but it took me ages and repeatedly washing just to get that stuff off the paintwork. It dried like glue. (DH has a poor sense of smell and couldn't detect it at all. Lucky him!)

We have used that recipe. The best way to apply it to the dog's coat is to dip a sponge into the solution, then apply on the dog's coat. It takes a while, but it does a good job.

Years ago, our dog pulled a skunk off of the side of a tree. I called the county agriculture service.

The answer was to wash the dog in tomato juice and place charcoal around the house. It took about a week, but every day was better.

If you are in a warm area, also set up fans.

I discovered that the only thing tomato juice will do is turn a white poodle pink. No effect whatsoever on odor. Since skunks are very active in my neighborhood, I keep a product called Skunk Off on hand. Abvailable at Amazon and Chewy.

I just remembered too that a company "Nature's Miracle" has a skunk smell product. Their regular product is a good one for getting out the remains of pet stains in the house.

When that happened to us, I was a master gardener wanna-be, taking the course. I called the guy from the university that taught the course because I knew that he had surely run into that issue at the school as they had a veterinary school as well as a school of agriculture. He was a bashful man and said "I hope you won't mind if I tell you this, but the simplest thing (and please don't think I am being fresh or forward) is to go down to the drugstore and get some Massengil douche powders. Do they even have that stuff now?

@happycat, the solution that has worked best for me is also the safest, since it does NOT involve putting hydrogen peroxide and baking soda and soap on a dog's face and injuring their eyes if you get it in them. While the spray is still on the dry dog, soak the dog in hair CONDITIONER. If you have to, shut the dog in the yard while you run to the store and buy the biggest bottle of cheap hair conditioner like "Suave" or something. Soak the hair with the condtioner, wearing rubber gloves and rubbing it all the way to the skin. THEN bathe the dog with dog shampoo. The oils in the conditioner will bind to the oil in the skunk spray and then the soap will wash it all down the drain together. Cooking oil would work as well but would require more shampooing to get the dog clean again. Depending on how desparate you are, you can use expensive hair conditioner, but if you live where your dog is apt to encounter skunks, keep a big jug of cheap conditioner on hand, so you are ready to go.

Tomato juice will only work depending on how far away the dog was when it was sprayed. You may have to have multiple baths but be careful of drying out the dog's skin. I've spritzed Don Astlet's X/O spary very lightly and that worked.

I would check the shampoo lines (Tropic Care and Burt's Bees) because they have a variety for specific "issues". Good Luck.

@Fressa. My dog had a light encounter about 2 months ago. I think she brushed against shrubbery the skunk sprayed. I swear by Don Aslett but I sprayed her several times and I can still smell skunk when I kiss her forehead.

THIS RECIPE!!! No to tomato juice. I would also try XOXO if you have it on hand. It is by Don Azlett. It may take more than one bath.

Thank you. It makes my eyes water just thinking about it.

Fortunately I cannot smell skunk. I never have. I always ask my DH what it smells like. He said he can't describe it, but it is putrid. When we walk the dog he will say "I smell skunk" and sure enough we will see one.

Our dog got skunked a few years ago at night, and I washed her on our deck with a large bucket of warm water and OxyClean. After a few rinses, I just towel dried her, and she was beautifully clean and didn't smell.
