Ava is doing so much better. She loves the canned I/D I bought her today, and the metronizadole has stopped the diarrhea. The Cerenia stopped the vomiting a couple of days ago.

She seems much more like her old self now, but I realize it's only because of the meds.

Thanks for the tip on the treats @candys mine . I'll see what happens and come up with something like that if she has to have one food only.

Ava's Ultrasound Today

I've been posting about Ava's problems with vomiting and now, diarrhea, too, as of today. My Vet referred her to the Animal Specialty Center for an ultrasound today. The Vet said that there was noticeable thickening of her stomach wall. He said that could be a result of the vomiting, or the vomiting could be because of that. He wants her to see the Internal Medicine Vet there for evaluation and most likely, for an endoscopy the same day. Her appointment is next Thursday. She will have to spend the night. That worries me for her, because she is so nervous and afraid when she's there. She pants loudly the entire time and didn't stop until we'd been home at least 30 minutes. They even gave her a sedative there.

I asked him what he thought was wrong with her, and he said if he had to guess he would say she has Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Does anyone here have a dog that has had this? Was it managed by diet? I'm just now looking up articles about it.

It sounds like a special diet is required, and that the dog has to stay on each diet they try for 6 - 8 weeks before switching. I just hate for Ava to be feeling so bad. The Vet today said to keep her on the Cerenia until her appt. next week. The good news is that he had her blood work results back from yesterday, and everything looked very good.

We had a dog that had IBS, it takes trial and error on feeding the dog. She was put on Eukanuba Lamb and Rice can dog food and mix with Eukanuba dry dog food (use the German Shepard type). German Shepards have loose stool so this dog food helps bond the stool. Any treats should be very bland ( we used to boil chicken breast and give her bits of it for treats. Also, our vet gave us a presciptions for meds that takes care of diarreha. When she started to get diarreha (after a while you can tell when it is about to start) give the dog the proper doses for about 3-5 days. This will catch it before it get real bad. Don't give the dog anything with spices or smoked flavor - You will regret this. If the IBS get bad for a few days - just give the dog can dog food, it you give them dry dog food it may irritate the dogs gut so can dog food for a few days helps sooth the irratation.

Good luck.
