Veterans Day

My son, dad, brother, niece, uncles, and many in prior generations are veterans.

My son is still in the Army and has been deployed 5 times. He's a Ranger, Master Paratrooper, and fairly high ranking officer. He suffers from injuries. He lost his best friend and one of his own soldiers. He lost several good friends.

I couldn't imagine some of the horrors he's seen, no matter what's been on the news. I feel for, and appreciate, all veterans, especially those who have been in war.

The VA is severely underfunded and understaffed. So many other services for veterans are seriously lacking. If we can send people to war, we should be able to adequately support and meet their needs when they come home.

Several cousins, classmates and those who have passed are my dad, grandfathers, uncles . . . and sadly friends. I thank them all being among those who gave all for my freedom.

The three veterans: Daddy was a front row artillery gunner in WW2 and also on the draft board during the Vietnam conflict

Hubbs served in the Air Force and is a Vietnam Era vet.

Sonny Boy was in the AIr Force and served in a SAC Base.

I remember taking my boys to a parade that Daddy marched in and when they saw their Grampa they saluted. Years later 2 of our grandsons as boy scouts carried the colors in the Memorial Day Parade. I am proud of all of them.

My father and mother, uncles, cousins and friends who served all have my thanks and gratitude.

Also have many civilian worker relatives who helped keep them flying, informed, and communication lines going to all parts of the world. It takes a lot of people to support DOD.

My father and uncle served in WW2 in Europe. My uncle was in the Air Force and flew bombing missions. He couldn't handle it mentally, and eventually came home. My father was in the Engineer Corps. He helped build the infrastructure for the troops to gain access for battle. Some of his group were injured or killed by land mines in the process. He had PTSD and nightmares until he passed away.

Always remember and be grateful for those who served and are currently serving.

My grandson and I are the veterans in our family, me in the USAF and he in the Navy.

My Dad was a pilot in WW2. He never spoke about "the War". He only spoke about the men that he served with. Did not have a clue that he recieved several metals and 2 Distinguised Flying Crosses.

It wasn't until I was in my 30s I saw a special on TV about one of the missions he had flown. It was to destroy the oil fields and refinery at Polesti (held by the Germans). Dad had flown more than his required number of missions overseas and was scheduled to go home. The Commander asked my Dad and his buddy to stay and fly one more mission.

The mission concept was created by some Big Wig in the Pentagon. It looked good on paper (to the Pentagon) so they put the plan into action. The mission was a complete failure. Over 500 servicemen lost their lives and 53 planes were lost.

Since Dad had been scheduled to go home, his plane and crew were assigned to another pilot. Dad's former plane was shot down and all the crew were killed in action.

I did not know any of this until the special on TV. When my Dad died, I was going through his wallet. And there with the pictures of his family was a picture of his plane.

My father was in the Navy in WWII, my FIL in the Air Force.

Two uncles served as well.

There is a big Air Force base--Tinker--south of us and east of Oklahoma City, so we have a lot of military activities and big planes coming in and out. I love seeing them!

I remember how exciting it was when the plane with the Space Shuttle on top spent the night here. We got to see it take off the next morning--drove down for the event!
