Christmas Theme Decorating

I am curious if anyone here does a different theme each year when decorating? I have my standard trees that I put up, possibly in a different location, but I do like to do something "different" each year as well. A theme.

For example, I try to have a theme for Christmas each year and will do a tree and a room or two in that theme.

No "theme" for me...my tree is a hodgepodge of decorations I've collected over the years. I did go through them a couple years ago and only kept what I really liked. My tree has only hanging ornaments and lights--no picks, garlands, ribbons or clips. I can see and enjoy each ornament!

My "sit around" decorations have been the same for several years now...went through those, too, and eliminated anything I didn't love.

I used to change it up every year. However, for the past 4-5 years I kept the set-up the same. I only added one piece last year...that's it.

I don't see myself really purchasing any new Christmas holiday decor, but I did have my eyes on a harvest/Fall vase Valerie showed in a recent preview. I 'might' order that piece.

I guess I have reached a point that I love all that we currently have and really don't see anything new to add/change up to make improvements.

I'm still going to enjoy watching the shows though...

@Sakuya Changing up the theme is a bit too ambitious for me. My tree has looked the same for many years, but it has moved once or twice. If anything, I will add something new each year.

Yes I have a black white red theme and if I get tired of it I'll switch. May just leave it this way forever who knows lol.

No. Can't be bothered. I have 2 small trees that I don't even take the decorations off them. I just put a garbage bag over them when I'm ready to put them away until the next year. The older I get the less I want to do.

I agree with you! I decorate with what means the most to me, not what a "designer" says the way a room or theme should be....that's their taste not mine. Same tree for 24 years now, favorite ornaments every year. Especially the ones my kids made in school 30-40 years ago. I glue them back together every now and then and love on them now if not more way back then. It's fun to find something I forgot about and the memories come rushing in.

@vermint - When you have things how like it becomes a nice tradition to put up your tried and true. Good for you for going through everything and only keeping what still speaks to you.

@PA Mom-to-mom - Growing up we put up the same things each year and mom got one new ornament each year. It was so fun to see who could spot it first.

@rockygems123 - What a lovely black and white tree! I like the idea of putting up a theme until one year decide you want to do something different.

@catter70 - I admit some years I don't have the energy to do what I planned. In those instances, I let myself scrap something or a few things if needed. I want to enjoy the holidays so if putting less displays up in a given year will help with that, then some things stay packed. I am sure there will come a time when I, too, will want to streamline it.

@JYWilliams - That kinda sounds like you change it up. I like the idea of putting up the ornaments that speak to you that year.

@clearpmurt - I bet your family has so much fun looking at the treasures the kids made when they were young. Our main family room tree is a timeline of what our interests were throughout the years mixed in with Christmas ornaments and of course, the ornaments the kids made in school.

I don't like to decorate for Christmas or any holiday. I never have, but did it because I had children.

The last big tree I put up in 2016 actually caused me so much anxiety that I cried....and I never do that.

Now we put up a small tabletop tree with white lights and I attach one red cardinal to it. I put out a few candles...a wreath on the door and my DH puts lights around all our front windows...because he wants to.

No theme. If I lived alone, I would just do the front door wreath. That's enough for me.

My Christmas time is spent baking and cooking. I make hundreds of cookies, candies and pasteries. That, I do enjoy and it serves a purpose.

A dirty Christmas tree with shiny baubles and ceramic do dads just don't anything for me.

We should all do what makes us happy whatever that is.

That requires to much effort. I put up 2 trees. One 6 feet and the other 3 feet. Ornaments are what I've colllected over the years. That's my Christmas decorating in a nutshell.

A theme? No theme. I've been collecting beautiful ornaments since I've been married and I love my decorated trees.

My tree looks pretty much the same every year. The ornaments I use all have some type of meaning to me as I have collected them over the years or been gifted from special people. So I couldn't stand to not use them all, as they mean so much to me.

I used to have a few different themes that I rotated...tartan, pastels, woodland, beaded fruit...but I gave all of it away last year when I downsized. The only thing I kept was some artificial greenery and mini wreaths. Last year, I didn't decorate at all because my house was in the midst of a remodel. I'm looking forward to discovering what I have on hand since the holiday season will be almost two years after the last time I saw my decorations.

Unless I see something during CIJ that is irresistable to me, I'll limit my purchases to the gift wreaths that I buy as gifts and have drop shipped to the recipients.

I do colors. For a long, long time it was blue and silver. About five years ago I changed to red, black and silver. I love it. I do move decorations around a bit. Changes things without spending any more money.

I have two different "themes" that I use around Christmas every year—does that count?

I host a holiday kickoff party every year on Black Friday that has now come to be called "Elf Friday" since we watch the movie "Elf" and enjoy festive treats to get the ball rolling on all the fun of the season. The weekend before Thanksgiving, I decorate with Elf-themed items plus lots of red and white, in combinations with snowflakes, polka dots, and candy cane stripes. But all of this only stays up for another week or so at most (I've had a couple of years where I took it all down the same night after everybody left!) before I get out my regular holiday decor, which is a sort-of theme of red and black Wallace plaid with lots of green trees, pinecones, holly, and poinsettias. Occasionally, I'll feel like making it a bit more serene or glamorous by dialing back the woodsy stuff and putting out my VPH pearl mosaic trees and spheres with the plaid, incorporating a few of the nice white snowflakes around from the Elf party.

(Whew! That was a long paragraph.)

I don't do a different theme. However, my best friend puts up 12 separate Christmas trees, all with a different theme. I'd never put up that many to begin with, but to each their own I guess.
She has: traditional tree, army tree, candy tree, Disney tree, kitchen tree with hot peppers, pets tree, just to name a few. She always sends emails with pics of each of them. I'll go through them to see if there's a particular nice one I'm forgetting about.

Love themed trees! However, I have two artificial trees and use the same ornaments from year to year. I'm thinking that this will be the last year for my tree with multi colored lights.
